I need to get these dowels out so I can remove my rocker shafts. The manual says to just grab them with pliers and pull...nope, they're pretty stuck. I fabricated a slide hammer for my vice grips, still can't get them to budge. The dowels must be tool steel, the vice grips aren't even gouging them up. In fact, the teeth of my pliers are being smoothed/ripped out by the pins. Any suggestions?

I'd heat the immediate surrounding metal, then chill the dowels with ice, dry ice, or one of those 'air duster' cans used for blowing dust off camera lens. If you invert the can and spray, it emits very cold liquid which rapidly evaporates, and cools whatever surface it contacts. Use extreme caution with both dry ice and air dusters, as they can cause skin damage. The air duster propellant can also be harmful, depending on what gas is used.

Ok, mission accomplished! A bit of heat and some valve grinding compound on the jaws of the vice grips did the job. My hands now hurt from squeezing them shut.

My homemade slide hammer worked pretty well.

It did mess up the teeth pretty bad on the old vice grips though.

No big deal on the teeth. I use a triangular file to reshape them.

While yer at it, get a bolt for the grips. Then you got an old pair without the hammer so you won't booger up a new pair next time. And next time just get a 5 or 6 inch bolt to screw in to replace the OEM adjuster. Then you don't have to worry about the hammer breaking the weld.

Dayum...Some of youz guyz is creative. I wouldn't think of these things on my own. Well, maybe I would, but only after a LOT of extensive cussing.

AJ, don't sell yourself short. I'm on my way out to the garage right now, but don't have a need to get stubborn pins out of a case. OTOH, I'm reasonably confident that extensive cussing will be required.

I don't really want to hijack this thread, but one finds expertise where he finds it. So, do you have any suggestions for specific cuss words or strings of cuss words that you've found particularly effective? My FJR has heard most everything and I'm beginning to think that I've either got to up my cursing game or start using a bigger hammer.

One of my dads favorites went something like this..

"You filthy cock eating piece of ******* puke **** ****... Mother screwing asslicking no good kunt lapper, stupid engineer who designed this piece of **** should be castrated!"..
To this day I don't unnerstand why he cleaned up mother screwing?

When we were kids and he went off we ran like hell. Then we got older, and just pointed and laughed.

Oh, he was a design engineer.

Reminds me of "A Christmas Story".

All back together and she runs sweet...no leaks either. Now it's time to list it on Craigslist for an "I don't really want to sell it" price.

My wife refers to it as "that thing". As in, "I don't like that thing", "that ugly thing you insist on keeping", "I can't believe you like that thing", so I told her I'd try to sell it. "Try" being the operative word. Of all the bikes I have, "that thing" is the only one she doesn't like.

I do a pretty good Yosemite Sam when called for. Give it a shot!
