Help,

I have a dead battery and would like to charge it. How to I get the panels off to get to it. Which panels come off and how and what is up with the quick release screw the manual talks about?

Thanks

Frank

The battery on the 06-07 is under the right side fairing panel (flat area under instrument cluster). 3 fasteners to remove; one is the quick release in tunnel by triple tree. While you are in there, you might want to wire for a battery tender. this will avoid having to go through this in the future. It will save you time in the long run. Getting to the battery is not hard; just kind of a pain. Your owners manual tells you how to access it. See ya.

Sorry, now I see that you have an 03. Disregard...

Try this link...

How do you release the quick release?

Look at the tech link I posted in edited response. It's phillips and will pop out after a 1/4 to 1/2 turn. Then use your thumb nail to pull it out. Make sure it does not fall into the black hole of despair.

Take the rearward right-side inner fairing panel off first (the one closest to the tank), it overlaps the forward panel and is fastened with hex heads. Then remove the hex head fasteners for the forward inner panel and remove the plastic "quick release" fastener in the middle just in front of the steering head. This plastic fastener is a pain and there's a good chance you'll break it the first time you try to remove it, I did. The panels are also a pain to remove; they are strangley shaped and fit snugly under the outer fairing and instrument pod; you will worry you're going to break something contorting them to remove them. Just take your time with it.

The battery is under the forward panel. I just had ours apart this afternoon for the same reason - had to put a charge in the battery.

I don't know what it is with Yamaha's obsession with the Hide The Battery game. My wife's FZ6 has the battery in a dumb place too - under the freaking gas tank. On my ZZR1200, it's right under the seat where it belongs.

Having left the ignition on yesterday I was just about to grab one of these after a fruitless search for the battery. I was just about to declare the dang thing didn't have a battery! Glad I found this thread. Now I just have to re-install the seat, side panels, and gas tank.
