I'd suggest a perfume kit, something with a Lady's name on it, from a nice store. I too have wrestled with this kind of decision. I did well with the perfume. I'd avoid anything alive, like a puppy or a kitten or a parrot - they don't travel well and if she wants to go out to celebrate her birthday with you she will have to hire a sitter.... Yes, a nice 3-6 oz bottle of perfume works best.
Alternately, any romance paperback with a hunky guy without a shirt on the cover also has worked for me.
