Never thought I'd be so unimpressed...

My wing was an '81, so not huge, very comfortable but also booooorrrriiiiinnng. If I thought about playing with it in a corner, it would scrape the pegs. Loved the luggage and side guards (no damage drops). It's really best at two-up Interstate Touring.

Damn !!! 23K, discounted to 15K. Are you sure?

I'd be laughed off the floor if I made an offer like

that here. I'd have never guessed. 15K has got to

be below cost?

Yep, I'm absolutely, positively sure.

Today's the day we give away the ATV and PWC and just left the dealership and the Wing in question is STILL sitting on the floor at $15,000. No one's bit on it yet.

I guess here in semi-rural Central Florida, even an $8000 slash hasn't been enough to entice someone to liberate some disposable income. And quite possibly, here in semi-rural Central Florida (midway between Tampa and Orlando) there just ISN'T any disposable income right now.

Agree with you, though...$15,000 MUST be below cost. I can't imagine there's an $8000 "kiss" on Gold Wings.

Must disagree a wee bit here,

I have swung a leg on the GL1800 a time or two. Never owned one, but have put a couple thousands miles on them none the less. I have to say that the GL1800 is a great bike! Assembled for a whole different purpose than the FJR and not really a fair comparison. Its like me trying to compare my FJR's performance and handling to my Late and Great 06 ZX10R!

In its class (Interstate Couch on Wheels) nothing comes close to beating it with regards to cost, reliability, performance and craftsmanship. I have a neighbor that just sold his '02 with 385,000 miles on it for a '08. The only thing he had to ever get repaired (other than tires and brakes) with all those miles was an alternator (under warranty no less).

I really enjoyed the hell out of my Brother's GL1800 (when I got to punish it). What other wheeled couch out there will ride a first gear wheelie, handle on rails (for its size), and touch the 140mph mark in stock form???

A couple of years ago I bought a 03 Wing with 8K miles from one of my friends. It was in showroom condition but the ride wasn't nearly as good as my FJR because of wimpy suspension on both ends. When I measured the sag on the non-adjustable front forks, it was 90mm. The rear shock has adjustable preload but way too much compression damping and not enough rebound damping. The 900 lb spring could handle about a 300 pound load before it would bottom on every bump. Traxxion's rear shock (and 1150 lb spring) was a huge improvement (ever change the rear shock on a GL1800) in the back end and their front spring kit reduced the front sag to 40mm but it still does not have as good of ride as the FJR ... some of that may be due to the tires which have very stiff sidewalls. I have ridden it 20K miles and have not had to fix anything. The engine is great, the frame is very solid, and it is a pretty good handler in spite of the suspension.

The Wing is really in its element riding double or on a fairly smooth surface that is straight enough to use the cruise control. The rest of the time I much prefer to be riding the FJR.

Just curious, WW....what are you disagreeing with???

I don't believe a single soul responding to this thread has said anything particularly disparaging about the 'Wing, other than that for its size, it's awfully cramped. There's NO questioning its class-leading status, just that it's not "The" bike for everyone, and speaking only for myself, and repeating the thread title, I was "underwhelmed". By the same token, I drove a Rolls Royce Corniche once. I was similarly unimpressed. :)

The demo was a 2009 "Audio Comfort Navi XM" model...$23,000 -- super discounted to $15,000!
Man, are they EVER tryin' to move these things! Who'da thunk they had an 8-grand markup on em?
How many miles on the “demo”? Perhaps that has something to do with the super discounted price. In my local area the least expensive 08’s, that I know of, outfitted like the bike you noted—with the exception of XM—are advertised at appx. $18.3K.

Anyway, took it for a spin. First impressions? WAY too much crap on a motorcycle.
Ouch! Now that I own one I’m calling all that stuff “instrumentation”. :pilot: Yeah! I couldn’t think of anything to add but a mount for my 376.
Barge---I’ve settled on “hun-duh-pottumus” as a nickname for my Wing. :eek:k:

35" Inseam--Not a problem for me. I’m not a “big” guy. However, I can see how a rider with a 35" inseam would feel cramped. Some of the longer legged riders on the Wing forum have a custom seat made, among other mods, that allows them to sit further back. Not too unusual, having a custom seat made for one’s bike. Had custom seats on both of my FJRs’.

I really like more emphasis on "sport."
Same here. I really miss the FJR. But, then again, I don’t plan on “marrying” this wing. In fact, I could see trading it, when the time comes (kitchen-pass required), on a C14 and a Vstrom(1K)—which is now on my “dream-sheet”. Or, at the very least, in the interim and not too distant future, complement the Wing with a CBR1K or a C14 until I sell the wing and get a Vstrom.

my wife would disagree as she was in love with the passenger side of things.
My wife loves our new Wing. She wanted me to get one years ago when I first took her for a ride on one. That “bark-o-lounge-r” on the back of it is just what the Dr. ordered as far as she is concerned. So, the wife made me do-it. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Funny thing, on the maiden voyage with the wife, felt a compelling urge to stop here.

Wonder what came over me? :D

Well put.

I've seen some of your videos. Would it be proper to ask if your brother's wing was, on occasion, a "screaming wing"? :) Is there a smilie for "whoosh"?!AIGF :bike:

Regarding power, well, I’m not saying, I don’t think mine has enough power—in fact, I appreciate the low-end grunt and it cruises just fine at interstate speed. But, I would welcome an additional 30 hp with a comparable increase in torque. It would suite me just fine if 1st gear had longer legs and didn’t tap out so quickly.

Yep, a day or so after getting the Wing, as I entered a four-lane with a median, a fellow accelerated hard from behind another vehicle in the slow-lane to pass another car and entered the fast lane—which I had already merged into--from the median after entering the roadway. Found out right then the Wing wasn't nearly as long-legged in 1st gear as the FJR. Still, I managed to avoid the oncoming car.

+1 on the Russell. Only seat that I could get comfortable with. The goldwing, not a sport tourer, but a good bike for its intended purpose.

Shokdimn,

Speaking of super Wings. A few years back, I had an occasion to "stop and talk" to a guy here in the Mpls/St Paul area on a Yellow GL. Thing was all tricked out with a Turbo!!

I don't remember how much PSI he said he was running, but he claimed that he was around 210 Hp on the dyno with almost as much Tq to match. I believed him!!! Based on the fact that before our "chat" he had just left a good 50ft rolling burn out at around 30mph. Was pretty Kool!!!

NOW THATS WHAT I CALL A SUPER WING!!

He offered to let me take her for a spin, But what I wanted to do to his Wing wasn't proper, considering I was working!!! HAhahahahahahahaha !!!

Some of the locale MN folks here might know this guy or heard about his bike. Nice fellow.

About 175 miles. I guess that's about 45 bucks off retail per mile? :)

Yep, that's one the differences that jumped out at me. It's time to shift the Wing at about the same RPM that the FJR reaches its power band.
