Here's how I spent my Friday morning, including 6 trips across the Coronado bay bridge to see all the action.

My goal was to witness the transit of two freshly restored aircraft to be transferred from the Navy Base at North Island to the USS Midway flight deck. Of course everyone I spoke with had different opinions on when/where this was to happen.

-I started out at about 0645, swung by the USS Midway Museum to see if any of the workers had the scoop. "Word on the street was they are coming today, don't know when."

-0700, head across the bridge, ride the perimeter of the base near the restoration hangers looking for a barge and/or crane that will be used for the bay transit, no luck.

-0745, back across the bridge to the USS Midway, maybe the plan has changed? "Nope, they are still coming today according to two additional people"

-0815, getting hungry I have a buy one get one free Egg McMuffin coupon burning a hole in my pocket. Back across the bridge to the base for breakfast.

-0845 as I mount the FJR after breakfast I hear quick siren chirps off in the distance. Must be a police escort of something big!

-0915 the two aircraft arrive at the pier on the way to the USS Midway

-1015 I head over to the USS Midway to see where the best seat will be for the arrival. Park to the port side, parking lot to stbd, flight deck? Hmmmm time for a photo or two

-1045 Rumor has it, the move is going to be postponed due to high winds. It is pretty windy today, rides across the bridge are one big long lean just to keep going straight/upright

-1115 I see a barge with a huge crane transiting up the bay, could it be?

-1130 Back to the base to hopefully witness some inventive rigging of these things

-1145 After a first failed attempt, the addition of some weights to the front wheels allowed the H-34 Helicopter to be lifted onto the barge

-1245 The A-3 Whale is ready to go as well, it will ride across the bay suspended by the crane

-1345 They are both safely onboard the flight deck ready for all of the Memorial day weekend guests.

The addition of my Givi 46 trunk comes in real handy to carry camera gear for days like this. :D

Hopefully we have some aviation history fans who enjoyed the pictures.

The day of work/fun was for my Father-in-law, retired Navy aircraft mechanic.

225 pictures should be enough to make a nice DVD slideshow for Father's Day.

Very nice addition to the Midway. Was there with my daughter in March and we both enjoyed the tour. Will have to go back since we didn't get to see the bridge, long line and ran out of time. My son is going to PLNU so we will be down in the fall.
