The above graphic was made by a very frustrated LDRider who's BMW K1200GT just suffered its second mechanical DNF... in as many rallies!

Yep.... a 2-up couple, DNF'ed the" Run What Ya Brung" rally last month, and now just DNF'ed the Land of Enchantment 1000. The bike now just shy of 39K on the odometer.

Here's his story.....

The basic BMW warranty was 3 years 36,000 miles. The extended warranty was through an outside insurer and covers another 36 months. The extended warranty will cover the problem, but it is much easier to deal with BMW as they have the ability to 'goodwill' a repair or part at any time just based on the dealer's input and don't scrutinize the previous maintenance intervals.
The point I was trying to make, was that at only 2500 miles out of the manufacturers warranty BMW has washed it's hand of my motorcycle and is now pushing it's expenses off on the 3rd party insurer. Even BMW can't afford to continue to repair their own crap! Don't get me wrong, We have grown to absolutely hate this motorcycle, have already divorced it and are moving on.

I'm not a koolaide drinker, but decided to try the brand as it looked like it would fulfill it's mission. As I explained to Steve Chalmers, we didn't have time to find another ride before the LOE, but are currently shopping. It's either one of Joe's "Gay" ST1300s or the Wing for the multidays and for the 24hr rallies the ZZR1200 is coming out of retirement!
Guy seems kinda done with the Kool-Aid now..... :D

For 2-up rally work, I counseled him to do the GL1800...

As part of my Post-Rally experience, I got to help load the $25,000 GT into a U-Haul so that they could take it home. It was my pleasure to help them out.

The day before, I had told him that they were not paying rally entry fees; instead, they were making donations. He got a laugh out of that.

I will be happy to see them on a more reliable ride. They are a great couple and deserve better.

They are, indeed. Jeff & Milinda Bakker are top-notch folks, and I have little doubt they will be on a GL1800 when they pull up to the Start Line of the Iron Butt Rally next year.

Here they are with that broke-dick POS machine loaded on a flat-bed at the end of the rally....

So what broke? The quad redundant trip odometer relay interface, or the windshield temp sensor?

The preliminary word is: cam chain tensioner

However, we won't really know until the shop tears into it..... Jeff Bakker promises to inform all on what the actual outcome is....

That is funny!!!!!!!! the picture that is........too bad for the couple trying to ride in the events. I have a buddy with a broken down Beemer. Happened on his way out to NFLD. and a cylinder blew in N.B. He took it to the BMW dealer in Moncton N.B and they said they fixed it. He couldn't ride it home because it almost vibrated apart. Turns out the mechanic forgot to balance the pistons :-((

He has now sworn off BMW also.

Around these parts BMW = Big Money Wasted

I won't be suprised if BMW does NOT tear this engine down. BMW dealers have been told to 'replace as a unit' rather than troubleshoot, according to a bud who works as a tech at a koolaid dealership.

You musta missed Jeff Bakker's words in the initial post: the bike is 2500 miles out of warrantry, and Bayrisch Motorrad isn't going to look at it. Jeff's Extended Warranty is through a 3rd Party... *they* will eat the cost. :glare:
