Courtesy SilverHound, I am now the proud owner of his magnificent Honda Super Blackbird. The purchase was fair, smooth and uneventful. As of noon today, my garage now holds my stalwart "been everywhere, let's go again" 2005 FJR and the barely broken in CBR1100XX. Pity it is 7 degrees tonight with "wintry mix" expected tomorrow in KC.

Kudos again to SilverHound....

Kudos also to my wife, who will never read this, for understanding me even when I don't understand myself....

I am indeed a lucky man and I am forever grateful to the gods/fates/saints for granting me the health and the ability to have these two great machines. Now I have to find more time to ride....

I suck at posting pictures or I would share some.

Muchos congrats!! I'd love to find a Blackbird to go in my stable as well! But I'm thinking something a little better suited for the track....

Congratulations on the new ride. Its always great fun to add a new toy.

If its any consolation, we spent the weekend in KC visiting #2 son, and then drove home today. It was mighty cold all the way home.

It stayed below freezing the entire trip.

Congrats on the new rocketship. I'm on my second XX, and can testify to the ability to spend a lot of money on Blackbird farkles (just like the FJR). Best one, however, is a suspension upgrade (probably the Blackbird's weakest link) if you're going to be raping twisties with it. Being divorced, my preference was a Traxxion AK-20 front end and a Penske rear shock. (Hehehe -- just testin' your wife's good graces.) ;)

Seriously, it's a great bike and nearly bulletproof. Wait til you wring it out above 7500 RPM.

Enjoy it when the weather turns again -- til then, the wife will probably catch you out in the garage staring at it so many times this winter that you'll have to remind her that's better than on the net looking at porn. You mentioned something about it being barely broken in -- mind me asking how many miles are on it?

Great bike- one of my riding buds has one. He put Corbin bags and a Givi touring screen on it and we have been all over New England and eastern Canada with it. He does envy the FJR at the end of a long day tho.. One caveat-be sure that the cam chain adjuster is the new upgraded style-the spring broke and we had to truck his 'Bird 300 miles home. Early tensioners had that problem-I'm not sure what year Honda upgraded.

I have heard of the CCT issue. Seems manageable. She has 8700 miles on the odo.

Congrats.... That's a great ride, My Buddy owns a '04 and swears it the last bike he will buy. He bought his new in '05 and got a great deal on it.

The 2001 is in my opinion the prettiest,Candy Red Pearl. The lights make it look like Candy Apple Red. Honda never gave a lot of color options on the bird in the U.S. Kinda like Yamaha with the FJR.

If your buddy bought his XX new in the U.S., it's HIGHLY unlikely it's an '04. The Honda Blackbird was manufactured for model years 1997 through 2007. However, only 1997 though 2003 model years were imported to the U.S. I'm reasonably sure Canada didn't get them after the 2003 year, as well, but I could be wrong about that. Europe and Australia did get them, so if someone on a Blackbird forum is talking about a 2004 to 2007 model, it's a pretty sure bet he or she is from those continents.

There were a few still-in-the-crate '03s floating around as late as 2005 in the U.S., and while I recall people on the XX boards scouring the country for the last of them, I just don't recall whether the last ones went in '05 or '06. I also recall discussions about whether it was feasible to buy a newer one elsewhere and get it licensed in the U.S. Seems to me that the conclusion was that it'd be more expensive to get the compliance certification than the effort would be worth.

And FWIW, under 10,000 miles really IS barely broken in for an XX. Glass smooth engine with overbuilt bottom end. Many go 200,000 miles with just basic maintenance, and there was one story about someone in Europe, I think, with some outrageous number like 340,000 miles (I recall it reported as Mi, not Km.). IMO, the late model XX's (including my current '03, ndivita's '01, but not my previous '97) have the best of all worlds in terms of instrument cluster. I like an analogue tach that's easy to read, and that's in the middle. Besides that, the truly nice touch is the LARGE numeral, well buffered digital speedo on the right. The combination makes glancing quickly for info a snap. And the digital temperature read-out instead of bars is nice, too.

The CCT replacement is a $25, 15 minute job. The early ones went through R/Rs, but I'm thinking it was 2000 or 2001 that the RR got relocated with bigger fins and the problem mostly disappeared. The '01's candy red IS gorgeous. The '02 (silver) and '03 (metallic black) got the last generation of upgrades, but there wasn't much more that hadn't been done on the '01. I believe the '01 has the earlier version of FI (so, for example, you need a different Powercommander than an '02 or '03 if you go that direction), and it may have had the earlier wiring loom that I recall as sometimes being problematic on '99s and '00s.

Warchild no longer has an XX, but he had two that saw a LOT of miles as his primary LD mount, and it was on his '02 that he set that ungawdly nuts BBG record of consecutive 1500 mile days in the Nevada Desert in '06. He wrote a large volume of XX maintenance stuff as good as all the FJR stuff we benefit from here for maintenance. WC was also the farkle satan for XXs for years and is directly responsible for so much $$ in aftermarket goodies being on mine.

I bought a brand new '97 'Bird off the dealer floor at the tail end of '98. Rode it four years and loved it. Very ballsy motor, snick slick tranny, even the non-adjustable suspension was okay. I added Heli bars, a National windscreen, foam grips and that was about it, other than a custom fabricated stainless steel luggage rack. Wife and I went all over the west and northwest. Fun, fun, fun! Unfortunately, age (arthritic neck, pinched nerve to my arm) caused my to change to the FJR. Good news: 'Bird went to my nephew. The little snot later told me he saw 165 on the clock, when the most I had ever observed was 155, but it was still pulling hard at that. My particular rendering seemed to hit a sweet spot at 95 or so where everything - engine, rpm, transmission and final drive, suspension, aerodynamics - was just perfect in sync. It wanted to run that all day long, just a breeze. I have a fond memory of my wife and I coming up from Sturgis to Bismarck in early July - long hilly straights with no - no! - traffic. We covered some ground, running along 95-105 for a couple of hours. Yes, old "Dos Equis" was - and is! - a superb and sweet machine. Enjoy!

Likewise to you Ndivita for making this a smooth transaction. I will miss the Bird but am glad it ended up in a good home. Now I can have the space and time to concentrate on the Winter farkling of my FJR. Here is a picture of the Bird just before being loaded on the truck to go to you so that all can behold her wonder. Good luck and enjoy!

It's really interesting how many of our Forum members admire the Bird'. When I was selling motorcycles for a few years they were fairly hard bikes to sell. It seemed that everyone wanted the next fastest bike out there. Each dealer only got one of the candy red ones in2001. As soon as I saw the color and the new dash I had to have one. So I was lucky to score one that year for a discounted price. Glad I did. I parted with it for the FJR,for comfort, two up,with only 10280 miles on the c lock. I am happy with my decision.

I stand corrected.. :blushsmiley: My Buddy's is an "03 It was still sitting on the showroom floor Late in "04 when he traded his 929 in on it. He got a good deal on it. After talking to him today, I realized that I had gotten the years mixed up.

Yep, the last time I saw a new one on a dealership floor was up here in Roseville during the summer of '04. I had my '97 then, and I think it was at the end of the summer that I recall sitting in a Starbucks here reading a paper and spotting a clearance sale ad with that '03 XX specifically listed. Next time I was in there, the bike was gone. I'm thinking it was toward the end of '05 that the last crated ones were being found somewhere back east, because I picked up my '03 at the Honda dealer in Reno in January '06 with just under 3,000 miles on it (I was living in Nevada that year), and I recall thinking that there weren't all that many '03s left out there with fewer miles.

It's a hell of a nice bike (especially that red one). I, too, am confused as to how it's been under appreciated. Magazines have always spouted praise about it, and it was the fastest bike you could buy for quite some time. I guess I can understand why someone would buy a Hayabusa or ZX-14, thinking he needs the fastest of the fastest bikes (i.e. being an idiot), but I can't imagine buying a ZZR1200 or the ZX-11 that came before it when the XX is available. If the CBR was a pair of Ray Bans, the ZZR1200 would be 3D movie glasses. At almost the same price. :)

I think what hurt sales initially,1997,was the fact that it wasn't far enough removed in looks and top speed from the legendary ZX11. I had a ZX at the time and they resembled each other a lot. The CBR though was much more refined. When I took mine to Cali. to ride the coast highway from up here in Denver, it was scary fast with all that air to breath. I brought it back and purchased a Power Commander, tuned it a little better, but it never felt like that again. I am enjoying it popularity right now, especially here on the Forum. Fabulous bike!
