Took a 200+mile ride today with an old riding partner that now has a Ninja 1000 to replace his1999 VFR. What a goer! Used to be when he was leading and pulled out to pass I would refrain a bit to keep from riding up his a_ _, not now, he and the ninja are just gone. Seems like I have to start going down a gear or two, depending.

 
Funny, I know someone locally here in BC who just bought a Ninja 1000 last week to replace his older VFR....loves it.

I have 4 other buds with that bike too.....considered it seriously, but went with the FJR, just liked more room, wind protection,

and built-in luggage. There's a local dealer selling the 2013 ABS for $9999, which is really pretty amazing value.

 
If your buddy wasn't pulling away with the VFR he was probably riding it wrong (like a cruiser or an FJR). That bike needs some Arrr Peee Emms to get to the major locomotion, but when you keep her up there, there ain't an FJR around that can keep up (talking about one up unloaded here) 'specially in the twisties. It may not seem like a comfortable way to ride, winding the bajeebers outta that little motor, but that is where it's happiest. Just ask Freddie (not me) Spencer.

I'm sure the Ninja liter bike is cool as **** too.

I was seriously looking at one but it was in the same insurance class as the Ninja ZX 10R so the cost was brutal to insure it.

VFRs were prime bikes but I do not like tap dancing. I like curves and sweepers, twisties are vastly overrated IMHO, to much like work and no time for scenery.

Power band on the VFR is wide. Not like a 600 inline 4. It is as enjoyable to ride sweepers on as it is in the tight stuff. In fact many feel it is still too heavy to be a great bike in truly tight curves. You'd really have to try one to feel what I mean

Certainly does not have the visceral torque of a big 1300 like the feejer. But it is a whole pant load of good fun. YMMV
