I bought a 2005 with 32,000 miles on it from a dealer three weeks ago. The bike was traded in there from a guy not from that area so they don't know much history about it. I'm looking for input on what I might should have done to the bike.

Here's my thoughts so far...

Sparkplugs

Check Valves

TBS

New CCT

Not sure if all these are needed but I guess I'm looking for a starting point.

I would love to hear any thoughts, ideas or input.

Thanks!

The dealer should be able to run the vin through the computer to see what recalls have been done etc and what maintenance has been done at a dealership. Don't forget about changing the oil, filter, rear oil, clutch and brake fluids.

Is it running well...any problems indicated???

Immediately, I would change the crankcase oil/filter and final drive hypoid oil

course, I might look at the sight glass or dip a straw into the filler hole and take a look at the oil to gauge it's cleanliness

I like to change oil every 5k on the even 5...30k, 35k, 40k using Shell Rotella Synthetic 5w40. Easy to remember when needed that way.

I might change the rear drive oil every 2-3 times the crankcase, or at least every rear tire change

If you don't hear any noise (marples in a can) on the right side of the engine, your CCT is good to go

check the tires closely

next time you raise the tank like to do a TBS (if no vibration at low rpms especially idle, then good to go there), then change the plugs to Iridiums

use never seize on the threads and dielectric grease inside the boots

next time you pull the color side panels under the seat off, check/clean your air cleaner

check your mileage while riding...if the engine feels smooth, pulls hard, and your mileage is somewhere around 40mpg...you are good to go there.

definitely check with the dealer to run the VIN before jumping into a valve check

I can hardly remember anyone having to adjust any of them at the first 26k check. I see no rush there.

these engines seem to hold their adjustment very very well.

just brainstorming here

Change them if the dealer hasn't already. Then you have a "known quantity" in there.

Check Valves
Tough call...should have been done 6k miles ago, but if the previous owner was a slacker, it may not have been done. Spend the money on a Factory Service Manual and do it yourself. The $90 you'll spend on the manual is much better money spent than the $200 to have a dealer do the check. Plus, you'll start learning about your bike.

Same as "Check Vales" question, but a TBS isn't nearly as "mission critical" as a valve check. Never done it on my on 04, get 40-50mpg, no bad vibes, runs like a raped ape. What's to check? More to the point, why?

Unless it's noisy, ignore it until your 52k mile valve check. Then consider changing it if you have a spare $75 burning a hole in your pocket. :D

Did you get the owners manual? Sometimes service records are written in there...

If not, get one -- the maintenance regimen is listed in the owners manual. Assume nothing's been done and start from zero.

Check the bike all-over and make sure everything (controls, switches, lights, etc.) works like it should. Put your hands on the bike and touch/try to move everything -- what's tight ~ what's loose?

Also, look at the battery: is it the correct one?, clean with tight terminals? Check its voltage -- 12.8+ V. Start the bike and check the charging system -- (something-like?) 13.5 ~ 14 V.

You're welcome.

Fluids, plugs come to mind first. Then a shake down cruise and look for obvious shortcomings, if none, away you go.

Thank you ALL very much for taking the time to give me some GREAT advice! This forum is awesome! :clapping:

I did do the basic checks when I bought the bike. (Looked everything over, tightened a few things) I guess I was just a little freaked out reading about things like the CCT. The bike runs great and sounds great so I'm not going to worry about any of that until the 52,000 mile check up.

I'm going to...

Change plugs, break and clutch fluid, oil and filter. Buy a owners and service manual, spend the money I was going to use on all that other crap on something fun for the bike and ride the bitch like theres no tomorrow! :yahoo:
