We just got one for testing. The one we have is a lot better at capturing than the one on this video.

DC has them on Ford Windstar vans and drives along rows of parked cars.

In the back of the van are wheel locks.

The DC government makes a lot of money on parking fines.

So COPS can't read plates on their own? That explains a lot of the tickets I have received.

Seriously, I have seen this technology around for a few years now, and it is both very cool, and a little scary.

Our local LEO's here, along with the NYS police, have been using these for the last couple of months now routinely and seem to be enjoying quite a bit of success with them. The town police will park the vehicle in the middle of Main Street and troll for a while until they get a hit.

And it prolly doesn't take long to get a hit either.

Overall I think this is pretty cool but should I be worried that the government is running around building a database of vehicle tags and their locations? That's what the guy said was one use of this pretty impressive tool. I also thought the police needed PC to run a plate. I guess this is an item for our professional LEO's and, gasp, any lawyers out there.

Seems like one possibility is that if someone runs from a traffic stop (assuming it's not stolen) the 'pursuit' could be transformed into a liesurely drive to the location the plate spends the most time at.

A 25 years ago I owed NYC a BOATLOAD of money in parking tickets. Thank God they didn't have this technology back then. If it's not abused or a violation of our civil rights, this is a pretty cool application of technology.

I recently got dog-piled over a post so here's my intent. I own a gun, I think Obama's the guy, Bush did a god job right up until Iraq (Cheney and Rumsfeld on the other hand...), I'm an ACLU supporter. I think drug users and dealers should be sent to some remote island somewhere and left to work out their problems on their own. Point is: I'm neither an Uber-Liberal nor a right wing nutjob. I don't have an agenda. I asked a question in our virtual corner watering-hole in the interest of moving the conversation along.
