For the past 5 years of so, the New England Riders have had an Annual Treasure Hunt. I have participated in all of them, finding them a great way to get around and see New England. Essentially the RB develops a list of things to chase down. Each item has an assigned point value. The one with the most points wins. Of course some of the items may have come in the form of a cryptic riddle, or on the surface something that should have been easily found, turned out to be not so easy.

Now I am not trying to turn you Northeast Folks into New England Riders. Actually it takes nothing to be a NER, other than reading posts over at Delphi Forums. We are not an organized group per se.

My objective is to see if there is any interest in participating in a season long Treasure Hunt for fun. We have had some vendors donate stuff in the past, but that is not something we should count on. This is purely for fun and bragging rights if anyone really listens to you.

The Current set of plans is to provide the rider 5 places to go in a month of which you can submit up to 10 photos to include ,of course, the place, your flag and 75% of your bike in a photo that is posted in the thread for the Treasure Hunt. For this you get to accumulate some points. Each month there would be 5 new places to go.

As an example of the places it could be National Landmarks, Neon Signs, State Parks, Diners and Mountain Summits. Again this is the base plan, of course it could become more interesting as time goes on, especially when creating the Bonus ones.

So with that said, any interest?? I may be developing the set of places to go and rules to be followed and some bonus places along the way. Since this is for the 2011 season April to September or so, any suggestions for type of attractions or what you might want to see as far as rules.

I come up with some base rules for TH 2011. It is a ways off so the rules can change. Take a look and if you got comments make them here and I will see if they can be worked into the TH. The original version of this was way more complicated, forcing the rider to really plan what they were going to do to score points. It was pointed out by some that it may be too complicated and might discourage riders from participating.

I was going to require a flag, but one person made the comment why would someone cheat when there is no money or prizes involved. Wanting participation over rules, I fell to the pressure and eliminated the flag.

The Blog where this is posted is a work in progress. When there are changes I will inform here.

Treasure Hunt Rules

Comments appreciated.

Am I the only guy having trouble understanding the rules?
Where are you having problems. While they are clear to me, because I wrote them, I can add any clarification that is needed. If you are having problems then I am sure others will also have problems.

The spreadsheet that was presented was for me modeling what might happen and the effect to scoring. I figured I would post it in hopes that it would be a visual guideline of what the scoring would look like.

Essentially you earn points through out the month. These points are scores are ranked and a new point value assigned (ala Nascar or F1), so that one rider can not simply run away with the event by out posting in all categories. This was know to happen in the past by some riders at NER and discouraged other riders from continuing in the TH. This revised scoring hopefully eliminates that.

Now what is not explained in the rules, because NER is used to posting photos for the TH. Your photos will be posted to another forum very similar to the one here, other than the fact it is located at Delphi Forums, sign up is free. Like here you need a photo hosting site, like Webshots, Flicker, etc etc.

Bump

Bumping this to see if there is any interest. NER is taking a different direction on the treasure hunt this year, so I have come up with a simplified Treasure Hunt.

I have generated 75 random locations with the assistance of Waymarking.com. These locations have been assigned point values from 100 to 1500 points. Your objective will be to capture up to 25 of these locations by riding to it and taking a picture of the location, which must include your bike and/or you in your gear. You will have 10 hours to capture these 25 locations which must be evidenced by a beginning and ending receipt with data and time on it. Each one of your pictures must contain the date and time as set in your camera. In addition to the 10 hour window your mileage must be at least 200 miles but may not exceed 325 miles. The one with the most points wins.

I will provide a list of the location names, GPS Coordinates, point value and a URL cross reference to the Waymark as posted at waymarking.com. This will provide additional information what to expect when you arrive at a destination. I will also provide a .GPX file for loading to your GPS / Routing software. Will also provide a Garmin GDB file, as well. These will be provided via email to those that want to play.

There will be a 2 week window to begin this journey, so you complete at your convenience.

First prize - braggin rights and hopefully you have a blast going to places you would not have gone to and ride some roads you never knew existed.

Any interest in such a game ??
