New Knee for Christmas

MRI tomorrow, six weeks to build the parts, a little pre-op PT and a new Right Knee on December 21st!

Planning to be healed up for Australia trip in March, Yosemite in May and Inuvik in June!

No need for that expensive surgery John. We'll do the doohickey knee replacement in my garage and have you out jogging in less than a hour.

Wifey had a new knee beginning of May this year. It can take a while to get well, it will never be perfect.

Biggest problem is bending the knee back much beyond 90 degrees (She's got to about 120, which is the limit). A real nuisance for getting up out of a low chair, or worse, off the ground, without help. Kneeling is almost out of the question (you do pray to your FJR before riding it?).

However, the pain from Her old joint is much improved (but not completely resolved). Some replacements do better than others, hope yours is one of the better ones.

Work the physio, it makes a huge difference to speed of, and degree of, recovery.

My late father in law had both done. Physical therapy and following the doctors orders is important to overall satisfaction with the results. On his first one he did the exercises and listened pretty well. The second time he had packed on some weight and whined a lot not wanting to do the exercises. That one he was less than happy with but in retrospect much of that fell on him.

Another good luck and hoping for a great outcome.

Pillion had her knee done in Dec and that worked out for her and she was ready to ride by May which was the plan. She had one of the best surgeons in the country do the deed. By a few weeks after surgery she had better than 90° movement for the first time since her horse kicked her in the side of the knee when she was in her 20's (a long, long time ago). She can kneel down too. But, she has to keep after exercising and flexibility training. If she is lax in this she has a real struggle getting on/off the bike.

I dunno if you have discussed your travel plans with your Dr. Every case is different, every doctor is different , every person is different. Pillion's Dr was concerned about flying that soon, blood clots behind the knee and long periods of immobility. DVT is bad stuff, you don't want to cause that. If you haven't talked to your Dr, you should. Also, TSA will pull you out of the lineup for special treatment if you have implants, but usually this is a good thing, you just have to coordinate with any fellow fliers.

Doctors can make a big difference. Find out how many operations he or she does a year. If he or she is not doing hundreds of them find another doctor. You don't want to go to someone doing less than fifty that's for sure. A lot of advancements have come along in the knee industry in the last few years. I don't get the six weeks to build the parts comment. We sell several sizes off the shelf. Unless you have some kind of weird circumstances going on and need a custom knee. That does happen from time to time. Some company's are starting to use printed parts. We are not there yet but are working in that direction. Honestly I am a little leary of printed metal parts as implants. I have seen what happens after sitting in water for a day or two and it's not pretty. It will take 15 to 20 years to find out what outcome will happen with printed metal implants.

Good advice, but it sounds like BJSD's doc choice has been set for a while. One of the reasons Pillion went to New England Baptist in Boston is because they have one of the lowest orthopedic surgical infection rates in the nation. New England Baptist: "...our performance on nationally recognized best practice measures is near perfect." Plus, her surgeon is an OR warrior, lots and lots of procedures each week and he is.... um, cutting edge(!) technology.
