My old monitor finally took a crap and got so blurry I could not read without being crosseyed.

I bought a new Samsung 19 inch with some pretty good specs, but, I took the first one back and have just hooked up the next one thinking it too is defective.

Here is the thing, and just discovered some clarity settings on the second monitor. The words or to be more specific some letters of some words are blurry or faded, the best example I can describe is when a printer is running out of ink. Some parts are clear and some are not. BUT, If I set my resolution to 800 x 600 or less its fine or 1400 x 900 is OK to, anything in between is headache material. I have an Nvida Gforce card and it is current on updates. I have also played with the refresh rates but they have no effect.

I would like to get a 1200 setting to work the 800 is too big and the 1400 is too small.

any sugestions?

Fencer,

I just went through this same event... you think you make one positive additions, and you got to make about 3 more modifications to make it work right.

Question: What kind of Video card do you have/Model?

When I got my 22" Display, my old card Did Not have the Native Resolution Settings for the new screen...yep, had to go out and get an update PNY Video Card/ nvidia 7600GS model that had the Correct settings to make the screen work properly.... then found out my Power Supply (350W) was not able to properly power up the New Card...Yep, had to go out and get at least a 450Watt PSU. Ended up with a 650Watt Corsair to make sure I had enough juice to make the Display happy as well as my other many devices.

Now it works. My reference Screen Settings are: 1680 x 1050 pixels. You have to find out if your card can supply the correct Reference Settings for your Display and it will then produce the Crisp Screen you are looking for.

For your Model Display, your Video card Must Offer the NATIVE resolution option of 1440x900 for Optimal Resolution. If it does not, get another video card that does or live with the Less than Optimal settings.

To find out what your Video card settings offer, Right click on your Desktop, Click Properties, Click Settings, Move the Screen Resolution Slider to 1440x900 area... if it is not found, your Video card does not match Optimally your Display Settings. My GS 7600 does offer those settings in my Card Settings.

HiYoSilver is on the right track. LCD's are fickle and only like to run in their native res. For a 19", thats generally 1280x1024, though some will ventrue into the 1400 area. I also run a 22" LCD at home (have two 19"s at work) which is at 1680x1050.

Your best bet might be to set the car at the monitors native res, then make your font's larger if you have trouble seeing them.

If you still have some issues and you still have my cell number, give me a shout tomorrow and we'll run through some things. XP also has a font smoothness setting somehwere (not on the normal beaten path) that I used with my laptop many moons ago. I'll see if I can find the info on that as well.

Rules for monitor refresh rate:

LCD = set to slowest refresh rate (usually 60)

CRT = set to highest refresh rate that the monitor will support

Also, check that "clear type" display for fonts is set. Go to DISPLAY PROPERTIES, APPEARANCE, EFFECTS, find the box for "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts" and set it to CLEAR TYPE. Do this for LCD monitors only (including laptops), not for CRT's.

And what the other guys already said, use the monitor in it's native mode. At a high resolution if things are too small to read you might also set the DPI setting higher (120) on the monitor properties tab under display properties. Avoid using larger fonts and icons if you can, it can screw up how pages are displayed, such as not being able to see buttons, etc. in some dialog boxes.
