My brother and I are taking a ride from KC into the Southwest in early May. We will likely spend the first night in Dodge City, KS. I am looking for good non-interstate hard-surface road recommendations traversing our way westward into and across northern New Mexico and into northern Arizona before hitting southern California.

Recommendations and suggestions welcome.

PM Patch308. I know the routes, but he knows the actual road designations.
https://www.motorcycleroads.com/routes/SouthWest/NM/NM_index.htm +10, Double Gunny! Patch308 knows the motorcycle roads of New Mexico north of Interstate 40 like the back of his hand (and he jacks off a lot!) and can give great advice, if you like dealing with drunken Marines! Check out this https://www.motorcycleroads.com link also, Mas Caminos Grandes!

https://www.motorcycleroads.com/routes/SouthWest/AZ/AZ_index.htm If you don't mind dealing with a drunken Irishman, I also know the roads of Northern Arizona like the back of my hand (just like Patch308, I also jack off!), but you will need to catch me when I'm sober (hours vary on this!). Feel free to contact me at either [email protected] or 480-440-4666

ndivita: I had recommended that you ride to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and I had provided you a link for this ride. However, since you are traveling in early May: I recommend that you call ahead to see if the road is open.

We got pounded by a storm here in Arizona last weekend and the North Rim Road may still be closed in early may. Here is another take on the road from a motorist's point of view: https://www.americansouthwest.net/arizona/grand_canyon/north_rim.html

Here are two phone numbers you can call for the status of the North Rim road, before you leave Kansas: Kaibab National Forest (520) 635-2681 and Grand Canyon National Park (520) 638-7888.

I am looking for good non-interstate hard-surface road recommendations ...across northern New Mexico and northern Arizona (North of I-40 please) Recommendations and suggestions welcome
How adamant are you about both staying in the states of NM and AZ and still being North of I-40? That limits the choice of (paved and non-interstate) routes considerably -- for a thru-route to CA.

If you're open to other states (or South of I-40)? well, you've been provided with some good resources already.

We have tentatively decided to ride through southern Colorado and drop down into northeastern Arizona. Rumor has it the speed limits are too low and the constables are too energetic in northern NM to justify the limited road choice. We are interested in getting to California as soon as is reasonably possible.

I donno where you heard that, but Colorado is no different than NM, and Arizona can be worse. Did you ever PM Patch?? Don't answer that...I know you didn't, because I just talked to him. When you ride through Colorado, be cautious of the gray unmarked Dodge Chargers. They are Highway Patrol.

Yes, I will answer that actually. No I did not PM Patch, which is amazingly exactty the same answer I would have given had you not told me not to answer that. I guess LEO activity is up everywhere. Thanks for all the help but my brother and I will probably flip a coin about which is the best way to go once we get down to Liberal, Kansas or thereabouts. I have detailed maps and a GPS so we should be OK.

ndivita, Sounds like you and your Brother have a plan in the making, but I just want to say that New Mexico Highway 64 is a motorcycling slice of heaven. It Really Is!

NM-64 starts just South of Raton at the Colorado border and runs West to the Four Corners Monument. Do ride at least one half of the New Mexico Enchanted Circle.

I'm with our HotRodZilla on LEO "diligence"! As a local, I would rank Arizona as #1, Colorado as #2, and New Mexico #3 in LEO "vigilance" in writing up speed tickets!

I happen to personally know the New Mexico State Trooper (nice guy) who operates out of Questa and I hope he'll cut me some slack if I'm running 20+ on Highway 64!

In my experience, Colorado is the worst. Just ask HotRodZilla! #1 - Colorado, #2 - Arizona, #3 - New Mexico.

I donno what we thought was gonna happen, but what I do know is: That State Cop in Red River is a fargin jackass. Next time he tries to pull me over, I'm gonna twist the throttle and RUN.

He should be so lucky...

he runs the risk of being uglied to death should you pull your helmet off during a traffic stop. :glare:
