8,300 miles and its time for new tires. I like the Michlin Pilot Road 4s. Any negatives?

 
You realize that is big-time NEPRT fodder, right?

The PR 4 tires are great. You will love them. Last a bit longer than average, and roll true. The front is better than the PR 2 or 3, but does eventually get a weird shape if you do much twisty roads. Pressure 40/42 F/R.

 
Seems to be the most popular tire on the forum. Downside is price. The latest challenger is the Dunlop Roadsmart 3 which I believe has a rebate deal going on right now. About $130 difference for two. Not sure if those people buying Roadsmarts would stick with Dunlops if prices were equal to the PR4, but for the discount it is a popular alternative for the people putting a lot of miles on their bikes.

I have PR4's being delivered today. Am at 9600 miiles on current PR4's and still not to wear bars. Your throttle hand and road surfaces will certainly provide different results.

I just mounted Dunlop RoadSmart IIIs on the Hayabusa. Awesome tires.

When I need to punt the OEM Bridgestones on the matte blue bike, I am going to try the new Pilot Road 5s.

I think of tires kinda like I think of helmets...

Since it's the only thing between you and (maybe) the road ... get the best you can afford.

 
Just mounted my second consecutive set of RoadSmart 3s, and -- as deagle suggests -- it's mostly price.

They're quite good tires, let's be clear, and I cannot believe that minuscule differences in performance will be significant given the way I ride. (63,000 miles and climbing.)

As with helmets, paying more for a tire does not necessarily equate to better or safer. Perhaps fit and finish might be better on a so-called high end helmet but a DOT (or SNELL) rating is the proof of safety.

I recently changed my PR4's and mounted Road 5's. I have only put 45 miles on the new ones so cannot give a fair comparison. The shop that mounted the 5's said they havel customers who are running 5's on various bikes (Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha). They report the front tires seem to be holding their shape better than the 4's. I had 12K miles on the 4's. Rear tire was nearly bald on center while front had not yet gotten to wear bar. Feather edge on front was not too bad. I hope the Road 5 front tire does better on wear pattern. I pumped up the pressure to 40psi F and remained at 42psi in rear.

 
Run 42/40 back/front on PR4's. Like I said above, at 9600 miles back tire getting a flat spot but still not to wear bars, but soon. Front tire looks like it could go forever and maintaining a pretty good shape overall. But I change them both at the same time, so Julie will be getting at least the front with some miles left in it.
