06 stock+PC3, I get 48mpg on backroads, mostly 3rd gear, 5-7k rpm.
But 90mph on the interstate in 5th, 38 mpg.

So it appears wind resistance is really the culprit, not the engine, rpm, or load.
Are you checking your mileage using the bike computer? I'm asking because when I installed my PC3 the computer started reading wildly optimistic. In other words, I check my mileage manually and I average 37mpg yet the computer tells me I'm getting 48mpg. The problem is that the bike computer only knows how much fuel it's computer is calling for, yet the PC3 is adding extra fuel that the bike computer doesn't know about.
Good point. Using the bike computer. I have done comparisons (i.e. miles/gal put in) vs. bike computer, and the bike computer is generally 3-4 mpg higher.

Just to contribute, I get about 38 no matter how hard I ride, lots of wheelies, 100+mph runs, etc. About 42 on the highway. With a passenger I get better mileage cause I probably ride smoother. Peak was 47mpg over a tank while cruising at 80mph across SD last summer.

I have a gen1, does anyone care?
I get about 40mpg freeway, on more cruising rides it does get into the low 50's, mostly mid to high 40's in cruiser mode.
How the heck do you and Mike get into the low 50s for mpg? I am assuming this is freeway mileage. What speed do you ride on the freeway?
I've skimmed through these and can't help but wonder how many riders' best results vary so wildly.

Mine's a gen1 so I don't have a mileage indicator. As such, my only post on this subject was when I too, just bought mine and wanted to see: I topped up the tank and rode it til it died (small gas can in the bag). I took the indicated 536kms (333 miles) and calculated my mileage by taking the tank capacity of 25L / 5.5 IMP / 6.6 US gallons. That was 50.45 mpg US. And that was on a fun but off-gas (<5000rpm) run up north in the laurentians and some boring slab at 105-110kms (<70mph). Almost no stops, just tooling around.

So Johnny, how can my older but low mileage (up to 7000 miles now) '03 score low 50s if you find that figure hard to achieve with your '07??? Unless you & I have reeaaally different ideas of what 'cruiser mode' means?

lay off the redbull ;)

See Fuelly banner below. This is all mixed riding. If I included my attempt at CFR this would be about 5mpg higher.
Speaking of which, my 04 got noticably better mileage that Moosehead's 06 who rode behind me entire way from Sudbury to Central Wisconsin. He'd be into reserve and I still had 2 bars left.
Steve - is your Fuelly set in UK mpg? UK is higher than US. At avg 20km/l, my mpg is around 47. MOST of my mileage is a combination of 4-lane (110 km) and secondary 2-lane (90 km) roads

Wow, I always thought the 2nd Gen's would get a few mpg better with their lower final drive. Keeping a steady throttle makes a big difference. Riding solo I do plenty of roll-ons passing and just having fun, and keeping it smooth with the wife on I always get better mpg.
