Pulling out of the parking garage today, I'm aware as usual of the semi-blind cross path in there but you can use the lobby windows at the last second to see if anyone is coming. Unusually, today someone was...and he was hauling butt. Way faster than he needed to be crossing the lane of exiting traffic.

We both laid in on the brakes and stupid me, was considering an evasive maneuver thinking I wasn't going to stop in time and stopped with the bars turned and feet still on the pegs. Doh! Past the point of no return so I laid her down as gently as I could. Hopped off and proceeded to lift her back up. Big silver piggy was easier to pick up than I thought she'd be. Must be side bags and sliders that allowed me to get her up a bit in angle before actually having to lift versus sport bikes I've had to pick up.

Had to do a little quick evaluation on the bike and the situation. No contact was made, the guy realized his mistake and was apologizing profusely, I should have been going a little slower and the fault of dropping the bike was mine. I was angry at him and angry at myself so I pointed at my scratched up paint, said the F word a few times. I realized that I didn't want to talk to this guy and I was holding up people trying to leave while I looked at the scratches my dumb self put on my bike. Threw a leg over and without another look rode around the guys car and rode home.

A little bit of plastic cleaner shows that the side bag scratches are very light but the mirror is scuffed pretty badly. All in all, could have been a lot worse. Now maybe I can start my search for black mirrors and start wrapping my bike with black vinyl.

Now, gotta add the drop club badge to my signature. I was so hoping to leave that one and the deer one off of there, dang.

Bummer!

Glad no blood was shed, though.

I've dropped the Hondapotomus a few times (actually fell over most times without me on it) but I'm saving the dropping of Lucille for... tomorrow.

You're gonna love the FZ1 mirrors!

FZ1 mirrors? I'm actually one of the few who is quite happy with my FJR mirrors. Hrm, maybe one of those guys sporting FZ1 mirrors has some stock FJR mirrors sitting in their garage though.

Sorry 'bout that.

I remember seeing a post on a Hondapotamus forum. At a rally, they had a Wing, a roll of carpet, and they were giving a "how to resurrect a fallen Hippo" workshop, particularly for women riders.

I was quite impressed - they had the women put their back against the tank, and use the leg muscles to push the bike up, like a power lifter doing a squat thrust. They seemed to manage quite well, apart from the risk of pushing it right over onto the far side (at the workshop they had people to catch it once upright, don't know what you would do out on the road, except push it up, reach around for the kick stand while it was balanced on your shoulders, and then lower it a bit)

One of these days I will get some carpet and a few friends, and try the same with my FJR. Would be quite a confidence builder to know I could get it upright again if I ever dropped it.

Idea for the next PNW Tech Meet ?

I believe the reason it was so easy to pick up was a small thing known as a squirt of adrenaline from embarrassment. At least I believe that was the reason it was so quick for me to pick mine up when I laid down Ol Yeller in my mom-in-law's snowy driveway. LOL

Hey, at least you didn't run into, or get run into, by that other guy. There's your silver lining. :)

Hopped off and proceeded to lift her back up. Big silver piggy was easier to pick up than I thought she'd be.

Are you volunteering your bike as the tip over candidate?

In ten PNW meets, only had one bike do the tip over involuntarily. I would like to keep it that way.

I guess, seeing as its my idea and my need. Got any thick carpet ? I could use some help taping up the fragile bits after I arrive, and maybe siphoning some gas out of the tank ... but then let's go for it. Hard bit might be to figure out how to drop her gracefully ....I've got sliders on the front, and I've been considering canyon bars on the back to protect the luggage.

Once I've had a turn or two, others can have a try ....

I would really like to know I could cope with a tip over if I had to.

PS when is the next PNW tech meet ? Are they annual or do you host more often ?

I'd procure a used banged up side case to use and fold in the mirror and make sure you have a slider before doing all that.

She was easier than my TLR that got dropped some years ago. That's a fat pig too. That was a bad one though. Took off with the disk lock on and it fell over. My non folding racing pegs brought that heavy bikes weight down on my big toe and broke the crap out of it. My foot was double sized a few hours later. Oh yea, did it in front of a goldwing rider who helped me right the bike. So painful and embarrassing.

Dang, wish I hadn't of broken my gopro mount, today would have been prime for wearing it on my daily commute like I've been doing!

Doesn't everyone tip their bike over to change the rear tire?

I'm negotiating with ExtremeMarine for the scraped up right case from his parted out bike ... that will save scratching mine up, and I already have sliders. Fold / tape / remove the mirrors, tape over the bar ends ....

Sorry to hear you dropped your FJR. Not sure how the Hondapatusmus fits into the thread, then again there are a lot of things that confuse me.

The next meet will be early October. I'll set the date sometime in August

Well find some carpet. We can get a few volunteers to set it on its side. Your might want to consider the canyon cage for the engine area. I believe Fairlaner posted what his 2013 looked like resting on them when they were prototyping his bike for fitment.

Thanks guys, it's all good. A few scuffs don't hurt it much and I'm not worried about resale value. I plan on riding this bike until either the wheels fall off, I'm too old to ride anymore, or I impale it on some idiots automobile. Hrm...maybe I need a better plan.

Sorry to hear about the drop.

If anyone can confirm that the mirrors for the 2003 and the 2006's are the same I have a brand new set that the previous owner of my (now ex) FJR included with the sale that I would be willing to send you. I just traded in the 2003 FJR and my 2003 FZ1 for a 2013 Super Tenere, so I have no need for the mirrors. I also have a barn door Yamaha Touring screen that appears to have never been mounted if you are interested.
