What he said, and as explained here in the third paragraph.
Thanks.

Back before the 55 mph speed limit became law MT didn't have a numerical speed limit, just what the officer judged as "reasonable and prudent". So people could drive like hell if it was reasonable and prudent to do so. Well, its a big state  So along comes the 55 mph imposed limit which MT had to do to keep its federal highway funding. But it's still a big state so if you got caught going >55, it was a "energy conservation violation" and a $5 fine! Friends of mine used to pack around a bunch of $5s in their glove box. Not me of course. MT tried going back to the "unlimited" or "reasonable and prudent" a few years ago but scrapped that for something more quantitative for law enforcement. Like 75 on an interstate and 70 on anything other than a cow track.

Cheers,

Its kind of interesting that they would use a couple hundred dollars worth of diesel to write a $75.00 speeding ticket. Doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense to me.
Maybe, but here in CA that would be great. Think about how much time is wasted, gas, as well, when some bonehead cuts off a truck. This causes the truck to jack knife and close up the freeway. Also think about how much more it costs the taxpayer for all the police, tow trucks, and maybe EMS (if needed) to lcean up one of those crashes. I think it's a great idea.
