"Harley Davidsons represent the most efficient way to convert gasoline to noise without the side effect of horsepower."
Found this today...thought it was sorta funny.

I never owned a Harley and probably never will, but I kind of like the way some of them look and I like the loping sound they make at idle, when they have a proper muffler. I hate the loud headache inducing noise the ones with straight pipes make as I go past them.

I stopped by the shop yesterday, close to closing time. They were putting up the used inventory. One Harley had the loudest pipes I believe I've heard in a long time. Ridiculously loud. Make your ears bleed loud. It was maybe the most stupid, ****-head set of pipes I've ever heard. Pissed me off immediately, and I've been riding bikes for over 33 years!

I'm not one of those noise pollution nuts. I've welded in two-chamber Flowmasters into the stock pipes on my '03 Mustang Cobra. It's got a nice rumble to it. I'm running the black Walker Holeshots on my FJR. Pleasing to the ear. But those V-twin hunks of metal, both metric cruisers and HDs, with open pipes are ******* obnoxious.

That's why I smoke them every chance I get. Pack of Harleys cluttering up one of my favorite backroads? Look out, I'm coming around. I've had them give me the slow down and wait to pass signal! Yeah, right. If the road is open, I'm going. I cannot, and will not, let a bunch of slow moving **** weeds ruin my ride.

Now, to be fair, not all Harley or cruiser riders are like that. Just enough to give most of them a bad name. I've run up onto groups of cruisers in the Hill Country, and it was laughable. Full speed (80 to 85) in the straights, then slow to 40 for the turns. Repeat. Please. Let me around before I stop and kill my self. These are not blind turns, these are wide-open sweepers, where most of us would be leaning over a bit. Not these guys and girls. There will often be a trike in the mix, for Christ's sake. A ******* trike! Excuse me, I gotta go throw up!

OK. I'm better now. Harleys? Sure, I like 'em. It just couldn't be my only bike. Maybe my fourth or fifth bike. Maybe not.

I recently heard this at the Toronto Motorcycle show, "the Harley is a highly engineered piece of machinery. It takes a special engineer to get 45 hp out of a 1200 cc engine" :)

gypsy

"Harley-Davidson, if they built an airplane would you fly in it???"

"Harley-Davidson, if they had more engineers than lawyers maybe they could build a better bike."

"Harley-Davidson, the first motorcycle company to replace the throttle with a volume control."

"Harley-Davidson, because stupid ain't cheap."

and finally...

"Harley-Davidson, because chicks need bikes too."

The greatest site for other Harley humor and sparring...

Oh no,

Another dreaded harley bashing tread.Let me concur with red,I can not sit behind their noise polluting oh so cool ass's at all and gladly smoke their ass's at every available opportunity.

Guys, you're killin' me! GunMD, that's one I've never heard before. Good one. I'll get a lot of use out of that one. red2kcbr, I hear ya. Took a ride to Durango last June during the Colorado state hog rally. Some of these guys and girls crack me up! I was going up Monarch Pass with the wife on back and a full load and came up on four of these guys doing 30 mph and they gave me the slow down signal too. And it was spitting snow. Yea, right. See ya in Salida!!

The majority of guys where I work ride Harleys. But whenever me and my FZ1 buddy try to get a little ride going on the weekend, these guys always have something better to do. They'll talk trash about riding all week long though. I guess their idea of a ride is a lot different than mine. To each his own, but it is fun to bash em' once in a while. I just don't get the whole loud pipe thing. The louder the pipes as I come up on one of them, the more the throttle gets twisted on the feejer. Now, that is fun!!

Loud pipes are better than Deer Whistles and quiet exhaust. I have never heard of a deer strike involving a Harley running straight pipes. Riding to and from Sturgis every year I have seen 'rolling thunder' actually chase deer away from the road.

“Perales was thrown from her 1993 Harley Davidson when she hit a large four-point buck as she drove south on Highway 49 at approximately 6:30 p.m. Friday.”

“Bryant and his wife, Pamela, were northbound on Tenn. 190 about a mile and a half north of Trezevant when several deer crossed in front of them, Trooper Michael Sullivan said. The couple's 2005 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide motorcycle struck one of the deer, and the Bryants were thrown off the motorcycle, he said.”

“Deputies found Ernest M. Thacker, 56, of Lake Geneva unresponsive in the road. A 1984 Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a carcass of a large deer were discovered 200 feet to the south. Thacker's vitals were checked by a semi-automatic external defibrillator and deputies performed CPR until Town of Lyons rescue personnel arrived. Thacker was pronounced dead at Lakeland Medical Center.”

“Weinmann, 35, was traveling south on U.S. 69 just south of 166th Street on Thursday evening when his 2000 Harley-Davidson struck a deer. Weinmann was taken by helicopter to Liberty Hospital, where he died Saturday.”

Yep, dem deer ar jist scared as hell from dem loud pipes on da Hog!

Another H-D owner fallacy all shot to hell..."Loud pipes save lives"

"Loud pipes...annoy the **** out of your neighbors and other motorists. Most of them equate the the H-D drivers IQ with the square root of the decibel level attained by said bike." :bleh:

Who has the quote, "Loud valves save lives."?

Having owned a Harley (an '02 Road King Classic) with throaty, but not loud, Vance and Hines pipes, I will say this about that: I hate straight pipes without silencers...

The least desirable piece on the bike was the 'Flexible Flyer' chassis. Heaven forbid you should ask 60 or 70% from it in the twisties. As far as power, for a boulevarder the stock power was adequate. The best piece on the bike was the tranny... snick, snick, snick, snick, snick... very smooth and quiet. Overall the bike was muy comfy, handled two-up PDG and got 50-55 mpg.

Now, keeping all that chrome in good shape - fagedaboudit!

Would I get another? Yup. Prolly in ten years or so, there will be a Road Glide in my garage. Always liked the looks and features of them. Best part is, in ten years time, they won't have changed a damn thing about the bike save for paint schemes! BWWWWWWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

What really get's me is, when a faster bike catches up to me in a no passing zone, I'll move over to the right side of my lane. If he wants to go by, he can do so. Now, most of the HD riders will just do the opposite. I do enjoy blowing by them, sometimes even in a no passing zone, if it's save to do so. :D

Latest quotes from the purveyors of Milwaukee built iron...

“What we’re seeing now is that the business is seasonal; it’s a whole new business model for us, and we’re having some trouble adjusting.” :dntknw:

“I think it’s fuel that’s really hurting things; you get the sense talking to customers that the desire’s there, it’s just that we can’t get people to pull the trigger and buy these bikes.” :trinibob:

“We’re using whatever deal it takes to move these bikes: free P&A, zero down, anything and everything it takes to get them to buy the bike.” :headbonk:

“Harley’s not helping, especially not with the financing deals that nobody around here qualifies for.” :nono:

“People are expecting too much for their used bike trade-ins, so we’re not dealing too much in used bikes anymore; there’s too many new bikes for that anyway.” :argue:

“Prices for used Harleys are down 25% on EBay from last year… I guess EBay’s the new Blue Book.” :reading:

“P&A and motorclothes sales are doing fine… More people come to the store now that we have a lot of bikes.” :brunette:

You never would have heard quotes like this 5 years ago...it looks like the motorcycle business is slipping into the malaise of the early 80's all over again. Well, at least the cruiser market... :alcoholic:

According to the just-received copy of Rider mag, the new $21,000 H-D FLKUTIOU Ultra-Glide Classic puts out a massive 65 hp with "only" 1,400cc of engine displacement.

Get the women and children off the streets.

That was/is a funny quote starting this thread.

The Harley twins are motorcycles after-all, completely unrelated to the rider.

And while they do perform pitifully*, I do believe they are very nice looking and have a cool idle sound.

*'cept for the Street rod which a talented rider will be able to keep close to an FJR on short straights or twisties.

And they are tons more fun to tool around than almost any car.
