I know I was quoted an unusually high insurance rate when I was seriously considering one. That, and the cost to add bags, a new seat and a touring windshield on top of the price of the bike changed my mind. My agent said it was probably the "Ninja" label that was driving up rates, at least in our area. It's like when I bought my Bandit 600 a number of years ago and was paying a much higher rate than my husband was for his Concours. In the eyes of the insurance companies, a GSF600 was in the same class as the GSXR600, and prone to just as much hooliganism as far as they were concerned!
As for touring, unless your friend is planning to spend a lot of time in areas where gas stations are more than 200 miles apart, he or she will be fine. I think it would make a perfect sport tourer for so done who doesn't want/need the weight and heft of something in the FJR class. It's versatility was my whole reason for contemplating it.
