No New Tickers???

I have an '05, 9.5k miles on it. All is quiet until it hits 3 bars. As soon as the 3rd bar illuminates, the valve noise gets very noticable. Let it cool back down and valve noise completely disappears. Can't decide if this is just the "typical valve noise" or if it is signs of a ticker in developing. With temps in the +90F range, my '05 quickly jumps to three bars and sits there all day. Yes, it is abnormally hot this summer; however, I'm getting tired of the valve noise.

Of note, just when I think the valve noise is getting "bad", I pull next to another bike and quickly get put back in place. A newer CBR makes at least 2x the noise. And Buell should be ashamed of the valve noise coming from their XB9 engine. Those bikes make TONS of valve noise. The FJR tick is a whisper compared to those bikes.

Funny story on the topic too. The other day, I'm riding home from work and thought for sure the ticking had settled in right there at a stop light. I thought a valve was going to pop straight up, spin a few times in the sky, and land right in my lap. As I pull away, I realize that the ticking isn't coorelated to my engine rpm. Look in the mirror to see a POS Nissan econobox had inched-up to my rear tire while waiting on the light. With blue smoke bellowing out it's tail pipe, it was only then did I realize it was the source of the ticking *LOL*

Maybe I should just take chill on the whole ticking thing *shrug*

Found this over on Joos's site.... dunno how accurate it is, but could be a good sign... maybe....

Sorry but couldn't find my original thread so I started another - some people expressed interest in this so this is what happened - My bike went in on Monday to the dealer in Sault Michigan -
it was a 05 ticker with about 9000 miles on it -

the service manager and mechanic both agreed that this sound was not normal for this engine and stated that this was the 1st one that they had seen (they sold 4 - 05 bikes this year) would contact Yamaha and get back to me - the Service manager stated that it would be fixed no matter what they had to do -

Got the call this morning and it was good news and should be good news for all especially those worrying about buying a new bike and getting a ticker - The service manager Pat told me that Yamaha is aware of the problem - they did'nt even want the VIN number -

Yamaha will be issuing a service bulletin on this sometime soon and will be coming out with some type of fix kit for it - he asked me if I wanted it repaired asap or if I wanted to wait until I put the bike away in October for the work to be done -

he said that riding it another 5000 or so miles wouldn't hurt it for now as Yamaha told him this that you could ride the bike for about 15000 miles after the onset of the tick without problem and there is no question about repairing the bike Pat stated that the Yamaha rep told him they will be repairing those out of warranty also -

So I am happy - hats off to Pat and Dennis and the boys at Chippewa Motors in the Sault - I will be riding to the Blue Ridge and Smokies again in Sept and once the season is done in late Oct my ticker will be repaired - Maybe Yamaha will get this right and so far I have only good to say about Yamaha -

WTF? Ticks in summer? Is this what you are talking about?

WC:

Thank you for the timely update, maybe my dealer will believe me when the service bulletin comes out.

though I must say: 05 (the fastest color, honestly) 9000 miles; strange sound (though faint) beginning but can't convince myself it's a tick yet

We've had rumors like this before.  Dealers say the damndest things.
Most definitely, they do.

Concur that this rumor could be just that, rumor. It shouldn't be taken as anything even remotely close to official, IMO.

Wait til you start hearing the clunk coming on at start-up. No happy-happy-joy-joy... <_<

I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that it's just my active imagination (and sacraficial chickens/virgins voodo magic chants etc :aaskull: just in case they're needed ) :dntknw:

Maybe avoid the "No happy-happy joy-joy" if not, I'll more than likely get a new top end for free (have the YES) Have to wait and see, in the meantime-I sure love my bike
