Mine has a little whine that reminds me of a turbine but my old FJ1200 had the same whine. Brings back good memories but at a much greater velocity. I also noticed my handlebars got loose after the power wheelies and the maximum braking exercise caused by the old lady with no turnsignaling ability yesterday but I don't really blame the bike for that.... :)

I am new to Yamaha, the FJR, and shaft drive bikes. My 05 seems to have a lot of gear whine, or maybe it's shaft whine. I don't really know because I don't have a frame of reference. I suspect it's whine from the gears in the shaft or the universal joints.

Is there something in particular I should check? I have read a lot about "dry" drive splines and underlubricated shaft parts. Would this cause a whine? It seems to be coming from directly below the seat, which leads me to believe it's u-joints. The gear oil is synthetic and at the correct level. The engine oil is too.

Very unlikely it is the final drive. Probably the primary drive. All FJR's (and most Yamaha inline-fours) have this whine. It will vary a bit from bike to bike because it is highly dependent on the tolerances in the primary gear drive. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Lubricating the splines is not going to change anything. It's a good idea, but it's not going to change the noise level. Some folks have reported underlubricated splines initially, but mine were fine. I think the best approach is to simply lubricate them with moly paste at every tire change.

Jerry, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

Go to your Yammy dealer ASAP and get that sodding thing fixed! Don't sound right to me, brudda. Not that I can hear the problem from here, mind you... ah, you know what I mean.

I get lash/slap, but other than that, my FJR purrs like a kitten. I can't hear anything in the rear end sans helmet. All I hear is that wonderful turbine sound in the top of the engnine.

You got trouble brewing, dude. Fix it, before it gets you in a fix!

Oh, and did you say you DID buy the YES from Yammy?
