Forcast for Saturday in Suches, looking better...
Saturday

2/23/2008

Hi: 55° Mostly sunny. Highs in the mid 50s. Northwest winds 5 to 15 mph. Lo: 37°Partly cloudy. Lows in the lower 30s.
It is looking better. Even if chance of a.m. rain I'm still riding. That would mean clear/dry roads for at least the 2nd part of the day.

Steve

Well, I took a shot at talking the wife out of the company part and going on the ride. That went over like a lead balloon, but I had to try. You guy have fun and ride safe.
There's a great article on managing the issues of riding and wives / SO's called Kitchen Points written by Jeff Hughes in the April 2008 issue of Sport Rider Magazine. I highly recommend it.

Looks like alot of rain between now and Saturday morning (rain in Suches & Tellico up through 1AM Saturday). Let's all pinky swear that we'll be mindful of that early Saturday -- gonna be alot of wet shady spots in the mountains.

Amen to that brother! Good thing we all have a temperature guage. Ice can be very cruel to us motorcyclists.

I'm meeting NormK at the Waffle King/Hut/Palace on Towne Lake & 575 at 8am. Anyone else interested in joining for the couple hours from Cherokee Co to Suches, meet us there at 8.

We're looking at running up this way

Google tells me that's a 2 hour ride. My trusty Zumo which is RARELY wrong tells me we may have time to do this -- we'll see what kind of progress we make.

I am still unshur about this trip. I havent ridden in cold rain in more than 10 years. Might make might not

If so I will see you all in the am

Got as far as Gainsville before I ran into thunderstorms. Zummo says 9:50 am at Gainsville so I turned back . I wouldnt have been able to make up the time. I was falling asleep on the way home and had to ride through storms in Deland out to 95. Everything was just against me. First the open house at work till 10pm. So I had no time for sleep or other things . Hope your ride was great.

Prolly a good thing your turned around pest. The temps never really warmed up today. Most of the day was spent in the upper 30's and low 40's. We had a great time.

Ride report and pictures to follow.

Thanks to everyone who came today, I had a good time riding with you guys and hope we can do it again soon.

Great job Calabash, thanks for putting this ride together. The wifey and I really enjoyed the ride, dispite the cold temps.

We decided not to stay and ride tomorrow due to the dodgy weather.

Looking forward to the ride report and pics, JW...thanks.

We must do it again, soon.

Awesome ride despite the chilly temp. Thanks to ngarider for bailing me out, and to Calabash for the logistics. I enjoyed each minute of it: been at the rear party with Norm allowed us to see the vistas a little more in detail. BTW, the fried pies, uhmmm, what a treat...

Looking forward to the ride report and pics

Thanks !!!

Ah, suicidal dogs, house fires and weather forecasting gone awry -- good times! Nice to meet everyone, and thanks again to Calabash for putting it together.

This was my first meeting and riding with anyone from the forum. It was good to put faces to the names. Now if I could just remember all of the names. It was interesting watching the temperature continue drop all the way down to 37 degrees. Still nobody bailed out except my friend Sid on the Connie. Thanks for waiting up for me at the turns.

They had a fire burning when I got home. It sure felt good.

Damnit, wife's company has their employee appreciation party that day. You guy's enjoy. I'll have to dress up and uncomfortable all night.
Also, I've heard through the grapevine that Dales hasn't had fuel for about a week and may not be getting any more as there is a good chance he's going out of business. Folks from other forums I'm on went up this weekend to try and help support him, but I don't know what the whole deal is. However, they said he didn't have any fuel this weekend.

So, you might want to give him a call to find out for sure, but definitly don't plan on him as a fuel stop untill you know for sure.
really? considering TWO is right across the street (assuming this is the gas station i'm thinking of), seems like he'd have a crapload of business, at least on the weekends when TWO is open. i'm not a businessman, but i'd think that the m/c weekend business alone would help carry him thru the week. look at the cash cow that deals gap is, now that they've invested in it. and i'm betting in 5-10 years the intersection where everyone gasses up at the motorcycle playground will be a huge $ business (if it isn't already).

I think the problem with Dales is that the locals don't give him much support. Most of them work outside the area and choose to purchase fuel and other items elsewhere because it's a little cheaper.

The ride report for the fried pie ride is: Here

TWO is not open in the winter, and for whatever reason, Dale is struggling to stay open. Another local forum (Blokes Sportbike Forum) rallied by some of it's members - headed up and to buy t-shirts, food, etc in an attempt to help Dale stay open. He had a big day Saturday a week ago. Don't know what his future holds.

oh, dang, i wasn't aware, i guess i was under the assumption that since it was in the "south", it would be open year round. i've only been there in september. that definitely makes a difference, then.
