Like many in the nation, I've been watching these incredible videos of the devastation in Japan.

And now it is personal....

My first-born son Tyler is right there, in the thick of it.... he is forward deployed on a Naval ship in Sasebo, Japan, and they are loading up to head to the worst of it. :(

He is onboard the USS Tortuga (LSD-46), and they are loading up their Landing Craft and will leave for the disaster areas in a few hours.

Dad has some apprehension here.... appreciate y'all projecting some good karmatic vibes over his way... he'll be right in the middle of that death and destruction by this time tomorrow....

DoD news article mentioning my son's ship: Defense.gov News Article: Military Gears Up to Help Japan

Holy ******* ****, this is just no good at all.... look at the energy of the tsunamis here..... :(

Thank Tyler for representing us all as a nation and for his willingness to contribute to relieving the pain, suffering and misery, which won’t be fully known for days or weeks to come. This may well be a life changing experience for him. I know he's up to the task.

I am glad he is there on my behalf. I know he welcomes this opportunity to be a huge positive influence in the outcome of this disaster.

He and all his comrades make us all proud.

Keep Going!

Kneeagrams lifted...

lotsa Navy friends rode out hurricanes on destroyers...expertise from the Commanding Officer, Officers in general, and the Senior Non Coms.

He's in good hands and will look back on it as doing positive work as a military man instead of destroying things and folks.

tell Tyler "Bravo Zulu" from Lt Mike for his service :yahoo:

Your son will have some stories to tell for sure. He'll get a Humanitarian Assistance Medal out of this too.

I am a retired Chief. I put 22+ years in the Navy. He is doing what he was trained for and expected to do. Give him the chance he deserves to make you and our country proud. I don't think he will let you down.

If there is anything I can do from this side of the world please let me know. Prayers and Good vibes from me . DR

Thanks for giving us the head-up Dale. It's good to know when our friends' loved ones are putting themselves on the line.

We will be praying for Tyler, your family and the other men and women tasked with getting some of that destruction under control. We will also be praying for those suffering from the destruction. That's a Hellavua thing.

I'm glad we've got folks there already who can and will help. They'll need it badly.

I didn't see your post when I posted here a few minutes after you did, with an incredible video of the flood sweeping across the countryside. It's hard to imagine how destructive this thing was, and we're only now beginning to see it. And good for you son and all our military folks, WC.

Now he gets to use all that training - he's going to experience first hand some really nasty crap, but he'll get his job done.

And then everyone on this forum is gonna owe him a beer when he gets back. I'd like to see him at WFO when he's able.

Dale, USS Tortuga was mentioned early yesterday morning on CNN from The Pentagon within hours after the quake, along with just two other ships. They're obviously a marquee vessel that can offer real, material assistance with those landing craft. In Haiti, remember that the docks were devastated, so the landing craft were vital. I expect they will be in Japan, too, considering that we've seen images of massive ships and fishing boats washed ashore.

I've always held the belief that young men and women join the military in part because they want to do things that are important; things bigger than themselves. Your son, with my greatest admiration and respect, like all our brave military personnel past and present, is doing just that.

Thank you, zip.

Thanks to everyone for their comments and karmatic vibes.....

Sounds like a fine young man - you must be very proud of your son.
Yes, I am very proud of Tyler.

But I am wringing my hands in agony, watching that nuclear plant blow up this morning... that whole area has to the potential to go all Chernobyl on them.

What a catastrophe. :(
