A friend's wife contacted me recently looking for suggestions for a surprise for his fathers' day--she wanted to buy him a motorcycle! So I start doing the research, one thing leading to another, and I got sidetracked looking at the KLR 650--not for him, for ME! Well, to make a long story short, I bought myself a new (2007) KLR today! My wife is at least as cool as my buddy's, cuz she was fine with the whole idea, so I rode the FJR out to the Kawasaki dealership today and rode the KLR home. Don't worry, I'm going back for the FJR tomorrow ;)

I've been wanting a dirt-capable bike again for a long time, one I can really go "adventuring" on, and I think this baby will fill the bill. Who knows, Alaska next? Baja? Tierra del Fuego? Camping trips for the summer coming up, at least! Still riding the FJR to Golden though.

Last thing, I'd like some input on whether or not to go for the extended (36 or 48 months) warranty. Tempting, though in general I always pass on these offers. I don't believe anybody would offer them if they lost money for the dealers. I can let the guy know Tuesday morning before he submits his paperwork on this deal.

Mike, dealer my daughter purchased her ninja from, said she could by the extended warranty any time before the one year warranty expired.

I did walk her passed the KLR a few times. She kept insisting she was to short to ride it.

I have an 02 and an 08 KLR. Luckily I bought the extended warranty with the 02 and at about 10,000 miles it paid for itself. However, KLR's in general are pretty bullet proof. I am not sure that I am going to get the warranty on the 08. You do have one year in which to decide.

Keep a good eye on the oil though for if you run extended high speeds they tend to get lose oil. For daily use, the KLR is hard to beat. I ride mine probably 275+ days a year and in the mid west that is a little harder to do than CA.

Yeah...the KLR is NOT a freeway bike. 65 mph and everything is good....70+ and it will use oil. It will take days or weeks to get to Alaska or Baja, but that's part of the adventure.

Don't spend the money, you won't need the extended warranty. Here's a couple web sites to check out.

You dog! I've been eyeing KLRs for years. Almost bought one more than once, then my stingy genes made me back out. You're going to have a great time! Congratulations!

Your mission, should you choose to accept it...FODS 2

I was going to pre-run a few routes and need a KLR rider as a gauge for difficulty and access. Looking for a break-in ride?

Congrats on the new bike!

Ooooooo. Way cool! I'm supposed to keep the rpm's low for the first 500 miles, but I'll try to get those on asap. What's the timing on this idea? The FODS trip sounds great too. Lemme know.
