FRUITLAND PARK, Fla. -- A woman riding as a passenger on a motorcycle in Lake County, Florida on Thursday night was thrown into a lake and swam to shore after her leg was severed in a three-car crash, according to authorities.
A sport utility vehicle also plunged into the lake and three people were injured in the crash, which happened just after 9 p.m. near county Road 466A and Picciola Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
According to troopers, the SUV was headed southbound on Picciola Road when the driver lost control, over-corrected and struck a van in the northbound lane.
A wheel from the SUV came off and struck a motorcycle, throwing the woman who was riding as a passenger off a bridge and into a lake about 25 feet below, troopers said. The woman swam to shore and passers-by helped her out of the water, troopers said.
The SUV, which was carrying two people, struck a guardrail and also plunged into the lake, troopers said.
Three people were airlifted to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, the FHP said.
Troopers said it's not believed that alcohol was a factor in the crash.
