NYS DMV has gone commercial?

So I get my registration renewal in the mail for the family truckster. Included in the envelope are two advertisements, one for state farm and one for FORD Then I get to register online at www.nysdmv.com - err wait a minute shouldn't that be .gov, thought .com was for commercial sights? Trying to avoid politics, which probably isn't possible, is it legal for the DMV to be sending advertisements? Any other states doing this?
