I have been rumored to be one of the most obsessive bike washers in this joint. I have one basic rule, "I don't work on a dirty bike."

Picture of me in my "happy place" on a recent 10-day ride.

So years of racing MX and dealing with dirt bikes has long had me in a ritual of washing the bike nearly every time I ride. If the weather has been dry and the bugs have not been plentiful, then I may go for several days without washing. But that's admittedly rare.

Here's my routine:

Take one(1) LOW PRESSURE electric pressure washer. Attach it to a hose, power and place it someplace it can live permanently without the need to unhook/hook.

Add one 2 gal. capacity el-cheapo garden sprayer. Fill it with a 1:4 solution of Simple Green.

Buy yourself a bundle of the discount store microfiber cloths for drying.

Stock up on Honda cleaner in the latest, less-expensive generic brand.

When the big girl needs a wash, spray it liberally with the diluted Simple Green solution. Go turn on the water for the pressure washer and hose her down using a wide fan setting and don't stick the nozzle close to bearings. Bugs come right off, bird parts come right off, pit bull parts come right off. Even Oh Sh!t I nearly missed that corner through mesh gear stains will dissolve away.

Wipe the paint areas dry with microfiber cloths. Wallah!!! You're done!

Before you go on a long trip, or every month or so, use the Honda cleaner BEFORE it gets dirty. It helps greatly to reduce water spotting and greatly reduces grime adhesion. Don't use the Honda cleaner on the wind screen or instrument bezels.

When cleaning the wind screen, ALWAYS rub it up/down in one direction only. Never wax-on/wax-off or sanda floor Danielson.

:)

I was really exited to get my new 08. Until I rode it home in the rain the other day. So then I tried to wash it I ended up with water spots all over. I remembed that I had one of those Mr Clean Auto Dry things. It was a pain in the but to use on a car with so much surface area. Tried it on the new bike and it worked alright but still had the spots. Anyone have any good tips on washing a black bike?? Never had anything that was black..
Thanks a bunch..

I currently own a black bike with way too much chrome... after the wash I blow dry it with what looks like a mini leaf blower (sold at HD shops). This method gets most of the water off, then hand dry it with 100% cotton rag. You shouldn't see any water spots after that.

wash a bike????
i don't understand that concept  :p
It's what I have to do to clear the mud and cow sh*t that I get covering my radiator after a spin down nearby country lanes (and yes, I do have a fenda extenda). The rest of the bike gets the mud etc. taken off while I'm at it

i thought cowsh*t made it go faster????

;)
If the cowsh*t's on the road it makes it go sideways faster, if it's in the radiator it makes it get hot faster. Other than that, it adds weight, so makes it go slower. And that's no bullsh*t.

Meguiars.

Car wash: Gold Class Car Wash Shampoo & Conditioner. I've spoken with their tech people and this is better than the newer cas washes they carry.

Spot & scratch remover: Scratch X. This stuff really works.

Polish: Show Car Glaze #7. This gives my 07 cherry the sparkle that makes chicks ooh and ahh....

Wax: Nxt Gen 2.0.

Wash the bike, use Scratch X on spots and scratches, then polish, then wax. Then next time you wash then simply dry off with cotten tees or whatever and no more water spots.

After I wash it I love to take her for a spin in the sunlight..... it never fails the looks and comments the bike receives.
What a lot of work!!!

Did a 300 miler yesterday and the bike was covered in bugs when I got back.

Some cheap car wash solution in a bucket, spray the bike, wash mit the bugs away (incuding the wheels and rear fender liner) with the soapy water, rinse and then some air to get the majority of the water off.

One pass over the bodywork, windshield and exhausts with the wax-as-u-dry and the bike looks new again. Required one microfiber towel for the task and all it did was get damp . . .

Looks new again.

Total time from parking to beer? 17 minutes.
Lot of work? Naw. I've only polished and waxed it once since I bought it back in Oct. The wax is still holding. I'll polish and wax again in the fall. I can't use cheap car wash cuz it will take off the wax. The Meguiar's car wash does a great job of taking off the crap while leaving on the the wax.

Now when I get mud and dirt on my 4runner from hitting the off-road trails, yeah, I like to leave to not wash it and show off where I've been....

When chicks see my shining cherry baby they ohh and ahh and some have even asked me for a ride. Chicks dig scars AND clean bikes.

Some posters, as you have seen, simply relish in stupid ******** when someone asks a legit question.
You say that like it's a bad thing!

:p

And as for the orignal poster, the answer is simple....................

DON'T BUY A BLACK BIKE!!!!!

There, how was that for relishing in stupid ********?
Ok I'll enter in the ******** side of this thread...I'm with you SkooterG, I owned one black bike and that was one too many....Buy a different color...solves all the problems-Waterspots, swirls, scratches, bug marks, bird crap marks etc.......

Not me personally, though my father-in-law did have some when I first met my better half. But, here in old England, we do have a few. And they are herded across roads in places. And they are not house-trained.

Can be quite interesting at times, particularly if it's been raining on top of the effluent. Which it has been known to do here. :flood:

Yamaha also has a waterless cleaner out that I've used with good success, but the one I used from Amsoil seemed to do the best, it even lifted off dried mud. It is also available at Pepboys, but I can't remember the name.
