So while riding back from the Smokies last week, I got bored riding I-75 (when not dodging idiots coming into my lane), and noticed the mile markers. So I decided to check my odometer to the mile markers. The first mile was spot on xx1.9 - xx2.9. The second mile resulted the same. However, the 3rd mile seemed just a little off. The odometer turned xx3.9 just a 1/2 second before the mile marker. I watched for about 10 miles, and there was becoming a big difference by mile 10. I'd estimate 2-3 seconds after my odometer turned, I would reach the mile marker.

So my questions are:

Is this a known issue?

Is it the mile marker placements...or...the odometer?

If this hasn't been documented, it would be great for someone else to confirm this while slabbing it. I know that there are meets coming up, where some are putting some miles on the interstate. So if someone is willing to do the math, say for 50 or 100 miles, that would help, as I couldn't stay focused while avoiding being a pinball.

Google "Are mile markers accurate" and you will get hundreds of hits, and many hours of reading on the subject.

Is this a known issue?
Yeah, it's discussed almost as often as the speedometer, but probably not as far off. It will also vary (same as the speedo) on the tire you choose and the amount of tire being used.

That's also why those of us that participate in competitive rallies always go through a odometer calibration on each rally. You're going to get a bunch of different responses from different years of bikes, different tire combinations, even different pressures. The ONLY way for you to know for sure is to calibrate over a known distance or better source. Typically rallies may have an odo check of 25.0 miles and I'll come back with 25.1 or maybe 25.2 miles. You want to get really anal you can do it over 100 miles....or 200 miles even.

Ok I'm just gonna shoot my face off now.
which one of your new guns are you going to use???

Just made a 1034 mile ride according to the odo. My GPS and the Spousal Unit's GPS both said we went 1014 miles.

BNJ, let me know if you need ammo.

Ok.. I'll hold off till after the election then..

Don Stanley, Zilla, FJRAY, Radio Howie, Don Carver. and whoever the collective nominates are in the running.

Lets get out and vote u fuks!

I'm in the highway-building industry. The mile markers are pretty accurate, but can be off by a few feet due to difficulty (sometimes) in finding a place to stab the post into the ground or tack the marker/tag to a concrete wall.

If you're really anal about it, hit up your local DOT or Public Works folks and ask about a nearby "measured mile." That will be something with etched marks in the concrete that measure 5,280.000 feet. And whoever dreamed up the feet-per-mile thing ... well, that's why I carry a calculator.

My 2014 A measures 10.2 miles over a 10.0 mile measured course. 2% ain't bad, about the same as the speedo error (in other words, almost non-existant).
