I am having a fun time finding a Yamaha part for an old bike.

From what I can tell, the first group of numbers represents a bike year and model, but does not define what the models it may apply to.

I believe that if I had a part 4SV-1234-00-05 it would be the same as 5PU-1234-00-05 because essentially the first number group is only there to allow the manufacturer to track parts usage by model.

Can anyone confirm or deny this for me?

Well, it's been 35+ years since I worked at a Yamaha shop, but the first 3 digits were the model number then. The last 2 digits are the part's revision sequence, and the 2 zeros in your example are for color codes, right vs left, and other minor things like that.

Denied. If the parts were the same why have two part numbers?

RichardS has given you most of it. The 5 numbers in the second set are Yamaha's way to identify what the part is. Example; 13440 is an oil filter.

The first three numbers (4SV, 5PU etc) tell you what model it was originally designed for, whether it be a bike, sled, 4 wheeler, etc.

In your example above (which appears to be missing a digit in the second set) lets say a "1234" is Yamaha's number for a handlebar. I also don't know what type of bikes a 4SV or a 5PU are without looking those numbers up. Say a Zuma uses a 4SV handlebar and a Venture uses a 5PU handlebar. There's going to be a big difference between one part and the other.

I agree with Behmer and myself!! He just expanded on what I should have clarified.

XYZ is the model number that a specific part is first used on. Your example 1234 should be 12345. If your older bike needs a ABC-12345 the chances of any other xxx-12345 fitting it would be slim to none. Good luck finding an old catalog. Time to go to barn sales, etc.!!
