"We won't be able to give you a room near the other SWFOG folks, since you're sorta last minute, sir."
"I'll thank you when I get there."
So.
I'm going to SW-FOG.
Should I head south to SoCal and then dead east - the "quick" interstate way?
Risky.
Might run into some of those SoCal FJR *******s...
Instead, I'll head straight out east, through the heart of Nevada.
Yeah, there's a chance I'll encounter FJR criminals there too,
but hopefully they'll be entertaining guests,
...and won't be on the road.
So, I'll head out after midnight, and take "The Loneliest Road in America" (Hwy. 50)
over to Utah, and stay the night in Green River. That'll kill the first 800 miles,
and leave me with an easy 400 mile day into Taos on Friday.
A fellow my age has gotta pace himself.
(If I had a GS Adventure, I could go as the crow flies. Then it'd only be about
140 miles to New Mexico. Look it up. )
On the road.
A fill-up before heading up into the mountains.
Through Fernley just as the sun was rising, and gliding through Fallon during
rush hour.
Izzat a British Columbia plate?
And out into the interior of the Silver State.
Morning in the high desert.
Cool, clean air.
Sharpens the senses.
Is there road work happening on EVERY highway in America?
(The flag-dude told me about 30 dirty jokes while we waited.
All of them were painfully corny.)
Moving along.
Traffic was ..........light.
But, there was a bit of it.
Approaching Eureka.
Wow!
They've got a new fire station! It looks like it roughly doubles the size
of the town.
And a few more familiar sights along good ol' Highway Fifty.
East End RV is about a hundred yards yonder.
One more, and we're through Nevada!
Made good time.
Utah.
The terrain changes.
My Lincoln rabbit there. Flying along.
Pondered how long those bluffs have been looking down at the goings-on
out here.
Almost to Green River, and a shower and a beer.
Sorta hot.
At the motel, a fellow parks his K1200LT next to me.
He's even German, with a thick accent.
Tells me he's riding from Florida to the west coast, on a two-week trip.
"For long-distance, this is best motorcycle" he advises me.
"Golly, is it? Where can I get one?"
Up and on the road before sunrise on Friday, heading into Colorado.
Decided to continue to Grand Junction and then shoot south through Montrose
and on down to Durango.
It rained continuously all the way to .........just kidding! NO rain.
The weather on this whole trip was just perfect! hahahaha!
That was for the WCR and NAFO and Greens and Whites ...and PNW guys.
I'm am killin' me here!
Colorado is awfully pretty in the early Autumn.
So, I'm just out of Montrose, where the scenery starts getting really
gorgeous, and I come up behind a seemingly endless line of cars.
I start picking them off 5 or 6 at a time, and after a good few miles, I reach the front
of the "slowdown". It's not a motorhome, or a farm tractor.
Going 35-40 in a 55.
For miles and miles.
Never using pullouts.
A group of half a dozen Ukranian ditch pumps (Thanks, Howie.), rented, I think,
and oblivious to the dozens of other motorists backed up behind them.
On the plus side, once I was past them (yeah, I "gestured") it was clear sailing and
and tons of fun on 550.
Wow. That was a *****-fest on my part, huh?
Back to the fun.
Seems like everyone on the forum has been through this area in the last few weeks.
A little gravel in some corners.
I think it's better to not have guard rails along some of these drop-offs, don't you?
If you go off, they'll just take the bike out from under you and you'll have to make
the trip down alone. No?
Man, I can't understand why pinhead hates Colorado and is getting out.
An uncomfortable stop for construction.
Just act casual.
-gulp-
"Hi fellas! Love ya!"
Geology is fascinating, huh? I often take pictures of different features
and then later research what I've seen.
See that layer of rock indicated by the arrow?...
When it was formed, Dr. Rich was still a teenager.
Almost to Durango. I could totally live out here.
...in the summer.
Okay. Almost to New Mexico ...and the fun. Another installment in a minute.
