So, I've been toying with the idea of another bike, maybe a Gen 2, Connie, Beemer, ETC.(mine's an '05) and also toying with buying an Olins rear shock but, holy crap are they expensive. So you know back and forth, yin and yang so on and so forth. Rode a BMW, liked it but, $$$$$$$$$$$. Looked at a 2010 Connie, nice bike but really, is it better than the FJR? Well, I can now answer the question. While at the IMS in Daytona I ran into Dave Behrend from Fast Bike Industries in NC and after some discussion I ordered an Olins rear shock for my bike. Well after the installation, not really all that bad, I've put about 400 miles on the bike on all kinds of roads and it's a new bike, PERIOD! I can't believe the improvement in the ride and handling. The roads are like glass, it's amazing, and in the corners, I'm on rails.

I can't recommend this shock, or company enough. I don't think there is any new bike on the market without an Olins that can compare to one with one.

Looks like an email is in order to get information for the FJR. WebSite for Fast Bike doesn't give a lot of information. Rebuild prices look reasonable though.

Having your FJR properly suspended is a wonderful improvement. The OEM parts are fairly used up after 10k-15k miles. Plus, if you're of normal stature and weight (IOW, over 6' and 200 lbs) the change is remarkable.

I'd like to take this opportunity to mention GPSuspension.com.

While I often tell people to support their local region (GP is in the PNW: Oregon City, OR) these fine folks have been very supportive of the FJR community through group buys and absolutely great service.

There are many members of this website who have purchased Penske or Ohlins shocks from them, had their forks modified (springs and valves) or, as in my case, had their aftermarket shock rebuilt and resprung. The guys are top-notch, A-1, etc., etc., etc., respected in the motorcycle suspension field and knowledgable.

the front end has Wilburs 1.2km/mm springs and Race Tech gold valving. handles great, uber great.

I fitted an Ohlins + sock this winter. Come the first ride out, it was very firm, but not harsh at all over the bumps. Lifts the rear end by margin (help with peg scraping-if I ever get that leaned over ;-) )

The spec on sag, compression and rebound seem spot on, out of the box. I fitted the Neoprene sock to give long lasting protection.

It is remarkable that Yamaha didn't fit a decent rear shock in the first place.

A very worthwhile modification, has have been my other mods.

My bike has 40K on it, the shock wasn't leaking but it wasn't ever of the caliber of this Ohlins.

As far as which shock I ordered, it was the one for my bike with me on it. David asked the questions and made sure it was correct. The model # is YA 052. The website is www.fastbikeindustries.com. They're in Henderson NC

And yes, it is amazing how well this bike handles with proper suspension.

I imagine the improvement is especially noticable on an FJR since the preload and compression damping is combined in the stock shock with only two settings (firm and soft). The thing I've noticed after mounting an Ohlins or a Penske in the past to my MCs is that the harder you push the suspension the better it seems to work which, of course, is the opposite of the stock suspension.
