I'm sure this has been discussed before so I'll take the blasting however I changed the oil in my 05 the other day and used a purolator pure one and Castrol syntec 10-40. I was talking to another feejer guy and he said I shouldn't run that oil because it can do damage to the clutch. He told me I should be running a Mobil 1 made especially for mtcs. I've never heard of this. By the way he is not a dealer nor does he sell Mobil 1. So what's the story,true or not? :unsure:

 
I have only 1 suggestion when it comes to what type of oil to use: do not use canola.

Seriously, though, if you go to most auto parts stores, they'll have specific motorcycle-compatible oils. There is a risk of premature clutch wear from the additives in certain oils, such as 'energy conserving'.

However, after you go see the prices of those oils at the auto parts store, you'll probably end up using the Yamaha oil from your local dealer. I bought a jug of it, and the price beat what I could motorcycle oil for locally. In fact, the price was less than most of the 'fancy' automotive oils, IE anything semi-synthetic or full synthetic.

 
Good ole fashioned dino-oil supplied by Yamaha works fine, no?

Nary an issue in 40K on my '03 FZ1 using strictly Yammie oil and filters.......of course my discount at the local dealer never hurts.

 
Yes indeed Mobil 1 has formulations for motorcycles. I've seen two @ local AutoZone, on for V-Twins & a 10-40 for other bikes which is what I used this month for my spring oil change. V-twin obviously recommended for Hardleys & Hardley clones but used almost exclusively by my good friend @ our local Ducati shop also.

 
You have an '05 right? Then you want the purolator PL14610. Good filter and they're blue. About $6. So you also want oil from a blue jug. My favorite is the Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40; about $16 a gallon. Hey this is NEPRT right?

That's right.... canola should only be used in the final drive.
The exception being that for BMW final drives, in which case you want to used Extra Virgin olive oil... it's easier to clean off the rear wheel and pumpkin housing.

I was gonna ignore this un' I'd say use the "wet kinda ****", but thats just me. Suppose you could somehow suspend graphite in a fluid.

Oh an' I was busy finishing yer quarters last night. Boarding yer ass is getting to be quite an expense. ;)

Ok I dumped the syntec and learned something here. Thanks for the advice. I thing I'll just go with the Shell rotella although the 5w-40 seams pretty light. :blink:
