Oil filter wrench for my FJR?

I installed William Riley's highway pegs and mounting plates on my Gen II. While they work great, and give me a place to stretch out my legs, the oil filter is covered up by the plate. I have the cup style oil filter wrench which has a 3/8" socket drive in its center. To use it to remove the oil filter I have to remove the peg mounting plate, something I don't want to do every time I change oil.

Does anyone know of a flat wrench style oil filter wrench that I could use. I had one for my Goldwing that was slim. There is enough clearance between the filter and peg plate for a flat wrench.

Any help would be appreciated.

 
I don't know why anybody would bother with a wrench. Finger tight with a finger tip of oil on the o-ring is more than adequate in every oil filter I've use on any vehicle including the FJR.

I have a Gen1 and Old Wild Bill highway bars. My strap wrench won't fit around the brackets so I use a pipe wrench to take the old filter off.

 
OK, now that the wrench question is put to bed, is it possible to actually remove the oil filter without removing the peg plate?

I changed the oil right before I added the pegs, so I haven't answered this for myself yet.

 
Yes, as has been reported a BAZILLION times, you still have enough room to remove the oil filter with the 'Wild Bill' highway peg brackets installed.

Jon - I too had used the cap style oil filter thing-a-ma-bob before the highway peg brackets were installed. Since it obviously doesnt work anymore, I went to Sears on and bought a set of 3 strap wrenches for like $15. So now I use a strap wrench to remove the filter.

For installing, like Iggy says, hand tight works great. I've done it that way more than 20 times and never a leak. Still a bitch to get off 4,000 miles later too.

You're then finger-tightening it a tad too much then. It's like 1/8 turn past where it spins on. I find after 4K that it's then moderately stiff to spin off with one hand. Those things only get tighter with time.

This applies only to the OEM filter, or do the longer substitutes also clear it?
That would probably then vary with each model. You want to build a matrix?

easiest and can likey be used on many of your vehicles. Your local wallyworld likely carries this.

Thanks for letting me know the Goldwing wrench will work on the FJR1300. That flat wrench will slip in perfectly.

+1, I use channel locks, after all, who needs a used used oil filter in good condition, hand-tighten the new filter, there's just enough room to slip it inside the mounting plate.

 
Well, I'll be darned---My flat Goldwing filter wrench does fit my '04 FJR Yammy filter. Why didn't someone tell me that 4 years ago?

I have the highway pegs and the Bike Johnny carbon fiber engine armor. I use one of the nylon strap wrenches and it slips in easily. Take up the slack and use a crescent wrench on the square metal shank. No problems! Packs easily in the tool kit.
