Oil leak on right side of bike?

Went riding with two buddies today. We made our last stop for some coffee, and one of them says "what's that leaking on your bike?"

Uh oh.

There is some sort of oil (or oil-like) fluid seeping around one of the hoses on my bike. The leak is very very slow, and we sat at the coffee shop for about thirty minutes and not one drop came loose. Still, my friend was able to get some on his finger when he touched the area on the hose.

The sight glass on the bike is full. I am not sure what it could be ... I read this post but I am ashamed to admit I don't know if this is the same area as on my bike, or where the water pump is

Any ideas?

The water pump is that metal piece that the hose you are touching connects to right behind your finger. I would clean all the oil off and see if it comes back.

The water pump is right behind the cover where that 90 degree elbow is, just to the left of your finger in picture #1.

That is the main coolant hose going from the water pump to the radiator. If you notice, the line you're pointing to is exactly where the main hose is covered by a protective sheath to prevent chafing as the hose wraps around the front of the motor in a 90 degree bend to go up to the radiator. The residue you're seeing is most likely lubricant used to be able to slide the sheath over the hose, or some residue from the adhesive used to glue the sheath to the hose. The link you posted actually involved engine oil leaking past the drive pump shaft.

I've pointed out the area you're pointing to (bottom arrow) as well has "chafe" points the "second hose" sleeve is there to protect.

Don't worry about it.

BTW, that IS oil on my hose.....got there when I pulled the timing cover off to look for cam chain sprocket damage.

Just a guess, but could it be a poorly sealed/loose crank bolt cover, not sure if I'm using the right terminology here but the little round thingy with the slit that the 3rd arrow from the bottom is crossing through in Howie's picture.

I wouldn't think so. IF it was leaking at the access cover, approx. where the top arrow is pointing, there would be obvious signs of oil everywhere the grouped three arrows are pointing.

Might I suggest a taste test? I know it sounds like a wiseass answer, but I'm serious.

No don't fill a shot glass, just a taste.

I worked with an old boy years back who would do just that.. Dab a little bit on his finger and taste the substance.

IIRC, Coolants are sweet, Gasoline oily with a burn, acid sour with a bite... Don't recall any others an' I can't ask him cause he's passed on..

Off topic, I experienced some high pitch squeaking sound from the water pump area!!! Like what i posted in other threads, its intermittent. Comes on during idle, (except warm up).

Recently, it came back on with the temp at 3 bars. I tried to pin point the exact location of the sound. The temp went up to 4 bars, fan came on, still the sound remains. And den, the fan goes off, and so did the sound!!! I will check again the next time for this pattern, meanwhile, anyone knows whats wrong?

The color looks a bit like iron oxide. It also looks like it may be trickling down inside the sheath on the radiator hose and coming out the bottom. Could be a loose clamp on the top of that radiator hose.

Have you been riding in the rain?

I still say clean it off and see if it comes back. If it does you may be able to see where it is coming from.
