I have had my oil light go on twice since I changed my oil a couple days ago. New 06AE, 600 mile oil change. Both were when the bike was still warming up. Its kinda freakin me out. There is plenty of fresh yamalube in there. The only thing I can think of is its not draining back fast enough when its cold. Or mechanical problems. Anyone else experience this?

Like Radman said, Is a level light and not a pressure light. If the filter were bad ,It would bypass and supply oil to the engine anyway. Beside that,as much as it has been run it would have died if it didn't have oil. :)

I've had the oil light come 2-3 times upon commencing my morning commute home. Conditions: cool 35-40 degrees. I did warm up till I had 3-4 bars. Everything OK until I merged (rapidly) onto the freeway. Then, ON came the low oil light. Freaked me out the first time. Like was said, it is a LOW OIL light, not a low pressure light. It eventually went out and I did add a little oil later. Not a problem. Each time I have had this problem it was cold outside and adding a little oil "solved" the problem. I make sure I have a full 4-5 bars now on cold mornings. I also check the sight glass for oil level.

When changing oil a simple way to ensure a correct fill is to use a 5 qt Mobil1 jug, fill it to the 4 litre level. This is the correct fill with filter. Dump it all at once, don't do the 3 litre, start, add 1 litre bs. You're good to go,and you know absolutely you have the correct amount in there. Period.

Ok. Good to know that its a level sensor. Thanks all, Ill add a little oil. I put nearly 4.5 quarts in when I filled it up though... This thing takes more than my car! Of course its got more power too :yahoo:

Engine temp. bars? My fan kicks on when the 4th shows up. One bar s/b plenty. I'm thinking the engine doesn't appreciate idling up to that temp. YMMV.

I didn't realize the oil light had that capability... does oil squirt out somewhere when that happens?

If thats the case, you have a bad sensor, or a bad measurement procedure. Or, could be the overfill is resulting in severe windage (crank whipping the oil) and the resultant froth is screwing up the sensor, not to mention the bearings. Sort it out if thats the case, drain, dump the filter, and refill with 4 LITRES of oil. If light still comes on, it's Yammer Time.

+1

Been doing that for years - except I use a "reputable" Case / IH jug that once held oil for my tractor!! :glare:

The dealer looked it up while I was there and said 4.2 qts. with filter change or something like that. I filled it up til the oil came just above the center of the sight window with the bike on the center stand. (ran and rechecked) I will definitely double check this out though. Just got done defending my thesis, so Ill have more time to play! I would think if it were a windage issue it would happen more than just when its cold. This happened both times before the engine was warmed up, but have never seen it happen otherwise.

I think gen 1 and gen 2 bikes have different scales. And, yeah, 1 bar is plenty on a gen 1. I just wait until it settles in below 1500 rpm.

When I change my oil and filter I add 4 quarts and 8 ozs. of oil (maybe an oz or 2 more). Never have had a problem with the oil light coming on. I just make sure after running it that the oil is near the TOP of the sight glass.

Let me make sure I have this correct.

An 06 FJR does NOT have a oil PRESSURE warning light, just an oil level light?
