15W40 Delvac....which is Mobil's version of Rotella. That is in pretty much every motor I own.
Regular or synthetic?

And, why are diesel oils superior? Why don't they put the same additives in automotive oils? Are additives that expensive? Or are the extra diesel additives a good application only for a motorcycle?

I'm thinking of switching to Delvac 15w40 on your recommendation, but I must admit a diesel oil was the last thing I would have thought of.

A pretty good resource for FAQ on oil. https://www.rotella.com

Of course they tout their oils but there is a lot of good information here, especially on why proper diesel oils are good for your bike's engine.

I am going to have to do that "engine oil 101" writeup one day....

The oils marketed as diesel oils have more (much more) of the anti-wear additives (ZDP) in them AND they do not contain the friction modifiers put into "gasoline engine" oils. The friction modifiers can cause clutch slippage over the long run. Not for use in motorcycles with wet clutches.

To meet the diesel specifications with a multi-vis oil the viscosity improvers added to the oil have to be synthetic to withstand the temperatures in the ring belt of a diesel piston. If it meets the diesel specs you can be sure that the VI package and the anti-wear package is as good as it gets. Even though the conventional oils are not marketed as synthetics or synthetic blends they do contain a good percentage of synthetic content in the VI and additive package.

I use the conventional oils but the synthetic diesel oils will work well also...they just really aren't necessary in an FJR engine.

If you look at the current crop of Delvac/Rotella/Delo branded diesel oils in the typical 15W40 offering and read the fine print you will see that the oils also meet the API SM specifications which ensure good performance in gasoline engines. SM is the latest gasoline engine oil performance specification.

The "diesel" oils are actually just very good oils that meet most all of the diesel oil specifications AND the gasoline engine oil specs. They are simply branded as diesel oils to differentiate from the oils marked with the ILSAC "starburst" symbol that says "for gasoline engines." Those starburst gasoline marked oils are technically known as GF4 oils that contain friction modifiers for improved fuel economy as well as limited (reduced) amounts of the ZDP anti-wear additive that can also poison the catalytic converter on gasoline engines if high oil consumption occurs over many thousands of miles.

Everyone knows that the Gas Wizard is a hoax. HOWEVER.....THIS DOES WORK.....

And it is on sale conveniently!!!
No thanks, my magnetic tank bag does double duty as a fuel saving device, so I don't need any more.

You could probably just cut & paste it from your post library.

I have used the Shell Rotella T synthetic and eight ounces of STP for over 25k miles now and the FJR shifts smooth as buttah.
Now, if I could just get rid of that awful CLUNK when I first put it in gear......

It's generally more work than I care to expend, but just a little extra work can

address that clunk easily. If I want to avoid the clunk I engage-disengage the

clutch about 3 times quickly while revving the engine(just slightly above idle

rpm) during each of the clutch moves.

A final clutch disengage, drop to idle rpm, and the drop into first gear will be

whisper quiet. As I said, it sometimes is more work than I'm up for. Or, if you

are caught in neutral at a changing signal, there may not be time until the clown

behinds you begins honking. But, a little practice, and it can be done pretty

fast.

The undead thread!!!

[thousands of moaning voices]

A-a-a-a-a-h. Brains!!! We want brains!!!!! A-a-a-a-a-ahh.

[/thousands of moaning voices]

31 months. New World Record!!! My wife's car loan wasn't that long!! Buy a car and pay it off between posts. Awesome!

I knew something was wrong when the thread at the top of NEPRT was titled, imaginatively enough, "oil." Nothing else, just "oil." No way that could actually happen, not since the meteor hit.

Still patiently waiting, 31 months later...

I would have cut & pasted one together from Jestal's posts, but he did a couple of "Scorched Earth" gigs where he deleted his best contributions to the forum while taking self-imposed time-out. Did he by chance show up at the Splinter forum?

Put in Shell Rotell-T synthetic 5-40W and never worry again about environmental factors or anything else. Just ride the hell out of it! :)

We've been bustin' the balls of the noobs for years about using the search, they started listening.

Man, you just can't win around here at FJRForum. We'll bust on you for anything and everything.

Put in Shell Rotell-T 15W-40 and never worry again about environmental factors or anything else. Just ride the hell out of it! :)
Fixed it for ya. ;)

And finally...........

I do miss Jestal. Saw him lurking here a little ways back once. Hope all is well with him with all the bad stuff going on at GM.

Thanks but not to put too fine a point on it but, Rotella-T Synthetic is 5-40W not 15-40W. You're thinking of the Rotella Dino in the white bottle which is a great oil too. ;)

I knew exactly what I was doing. I was being a smart ***. But you ARE putting your 'W' in the wrong place. But I forgive you. ;)

And most of the conversation above has been about the conventional 15W-40 Rotella T oil. And you do realize that the Rotella T synthetic 5W-40 oil is NOT a true synthetic oil, don't you?

God, I love an oil thread!

Sorry about that :)

I do love the oil threads!!! :)

I know the difference and yes, not a true syn. but probably the best anyway. As we tend to discuss this I think it's said best in the FAQ's: we all agree engines need oil, just put it in and change is every now and then.

Thanks and I didn't get the joke at first, no problemo.

Now, get out there and ride!

Trying to find Delvac 1, 15W40 Full Syn, but not having any luck. So far I've checked WallyWorld, Kragen, Pep Boys & Costco. Full Syn seems to be the problem. Any one know a good distributor in San Diego?

TIA

[edit] add Napa to the not-have list.

I don't think it's a 15-40 -- but, is a 5-40:https://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS...1_ESP_5W-40.asp

Maybe try ExxonMobil for a distributor in your area?
Thanks Charisma... tried that first & only found one listing in San Diego. And of course, closed on the weekends! I ended up going with high-dollar Mobil 1 4T ($9/qt!). Ran Rotella T Full Syn last & it was fine (& cheap - ~$12/gallon). Have to wait for the next change & I'll be better prepared with Delvac.

I'll be comparing notes of the 3. IMO with Rotella the shifting became a tad notchy, though could just be the FJR.
