If I plug a GPS or some other device into the power outlet in the glove box do I have to ride with the lid open? I can't find a slot that a cord would slide into to allow the top to close.

Maybe it's obvious. The wife says I can't find anything until she points it out to me, but I'm sure not going to ask her.

Thanks,

Keith

No, you can still use it. You just need to fit the GPS it in the compartment fully before you close the lid. ;)

That's a feature.....not a bug.

...often discussed, more often lamented, occasionally confused looks, and rarely an epithet like "What were f***ing Yamaha engineers thinking?"

Also, most people want to hardwire their GPS to be on all the time anyway. The drain is minimal and turn the GPS off when not in use.

But there is no way to mount the GPS and plug it into the power outlet and close the lid? If I understand what you are saying, I have to put the GPS in the box and just pull it out periodically to look at it?

Hmmm....guess the next question will be on how to hardwire it.

You mean to say that your 08 doesn't have the "GPS viewing window" in the glove box lid???

OK Daddydukes now this would be one of those times when you should really read what the reply was and remember, bunch of guys hanging out, Sarcasm, wink, wink, nudge nudge.

Well I won't rag on ya too much but on my 06 there is a rubber grommet close to the bottom of the box. Removing that allows a cord to be passed through. Can't imagine that Yamaha did away with this feature on the 08.

+1 on the hole in the bottom!

If you bought the bike at a dealer he should have explained it to you. I have an 08 and the dealer should me the hole and explained what you could use

it for. But then again i bought my bike at D&H cycle. They spent 1 1/2 hours going over everything. Awsome dealership.

Just for fun one day I put my Escort 8500 sideways in my '05 glovebox, and it was a perfect fit, snug as a bug facing fowards on its side.

I popped off panel 'A' and hardwired the 8500 with a fuseblade and ran the Escort hardwire cord w/ a remote warning light up to the left of my tach, where I put it in a small plastic bag and sealed it with black tape except for the warning light, and velcroed it next to the tach .

So far it works pretty good, my radar is dry and secure 24/7 , no need to unplug it and put it away, etc,

I programmed it to ignore X band which is never police radar around here, and high sensitivity for Ka and K band.

So far I'm picking up K and ka band no problem, don't think I've lost much in the way of sensitivity having it in the dash.

I know the Escort cannot pick up laser from inside the dash, but ( and I know some say they do get 'warnings' by picking up Laser use on other vehicles ahead of them) I really don't think its much to give up, since they have you if you are reading it anyhow.

I might go ahead and hardwire the GPS for switched power and save the outlet for heated gloves or something else.

You know, there wasn't a GPS window, but with my handy jig saw, there now is. No more problems with plugging up a GPS in the box. If anyone needs me to cut a "window" in their's I'll be happy too.

I have a Zumo 550, and I don't like to hardwire it to the bike. I move it among several vehicles.

The battery on the FJR is up at the front on the right below the front brake master cylinder. I put a pig tail with a covered, fused SAE 2 pin connector on the battery, and I made some special cords for my Valentine One, and my Zumo.

I thought the power outlet in the closed box was sort of silly. Moto Guzzi Norge has one under the seat, with specific instructions not to use it when riding the bike. What do these idiots think the power outlets are for? Heated clothing, radar detectors, and GPSs are all used while riding, not while parked.

Before I did a permanent wiring solution for a few things I ran my XM power out of the glovebox and simply closed the lid on the cord. No big deal.

Way to much "thinking" here. Can you say Powerlet...or better yet Centach. 30 minutes and $30 goes a long way toward solving these little problems.

My wife's the same. But usually right.

I put a slot to a new hole in the grommet at the base of the glovebox (click on the image for a larger view):

Full story of my fitment here.

I've seen alot of posts about installing GPS and how to get power to them. I've just read on and never commented. Of all the posts I've seen nobody has done what I did and that was to simply run the hot wire from the GPS to the keyed side of my horn fuse. I did my install almost a year ago and have had no issues. To elaborate, I picked the horn because it was somthing that only works when the key is in the on posison and if I happen to blow that fuse, well, so what!. I then pulled the fuse and used a meter to determine which side of the block was hot when the key was turned on. I then took the HOT lead from the Zumo wire harness, stuck it in the fuse block and shoved the fuse back in to hold the wire. The wire from the Zumo has an inline fuse and the Zumo shouldnt be drawing power through the Horn fuse itself aas its plugged into the hot side. Done, you turn on the bike and the zumo comes on. You turn off the bike and the zumo displays a message that it just lost external power and prompts if you want to continue on battery. By default its no, so 30 secounds after shutting down the bike the Zumo is off as well. This was free, and literally took about 5 mins to do. I hooked up the car mount exacly the same.
