I got my new AE and so far it has 30 miles and 3 heat cycles. Should I feel bad about riding a couple hundred miles tomorrow? I plan to keep the revs and load varied but just thought I'd ask for piece of mind.

I don't see why not. A couple of hundred miles at below 4K rpm (and varying). Best to take back roads instead of the slab to make it more fun. Stop to smell a few flowers along the way. All good.

30 miles? she's still a virgin!

Yeah I just didn't do any high rev's or constant same speed cruising (varied it somewhat) for the first 1K. Remember 600 is oil/lube service and it comes quickly.

Have fun n log some miles and make the bike become an extension of yourself!

I think you should be fine. I rode mine brand new off the showroom floor with 2 miles on it for several hundred miles the first day, and about 150 the next with varying RPM's. Bike now has 10k miles on it, and I havent had a problem with it yet.

I rode a brand new Blackbird from the dealer to home - 650 miles, in one day. I kept running at different RPMs in different gears, using varying amounts of throttle and so on. I road that bike for four years and the motor was marvelous. Go ride it!

Sounds good guys! Can't wait, 80 degrees and sunny all day!

Speaking of oil, Might as well send this one off to the wasteland...

Are there any useful oil threads someone could link me to? I feel like I ran expensive Amsoil in my blackbird all those years for nothing. Just ike that bike, I'm never going to wear out my FJR, just change it's oil as needed. Is there a FJR go-to cheap oil that gets the job done?

Oh boy, so ya wanna have your thread tossed into the "Never Ending..." wasteland huh?

Well do yourself a favor and do a search, there's plenty of riffraff about it here. But in a nutshell, I use Mobil-1 synth from Walmart in a 5qt jug. Convenient and quite reasonable as is the Rotella line there as well. Have fun with the oil threads!

There is a problem searching on this topic. Slippery dead dinosaur byproducts is a three letter word which this Forum can not search on, the inability to search for three letter words or less is common among Forums. The work-around is to use Google and search this way, type this or copy/paste this into the search box: oil site:fjrforum.com be prepared for 2.78 e6 pages of mostly repeat misinformation. :)

Walmart has rotella synthetic at a very reasonable price ;)
I think that's what I'm going to run. Not looking for anything flashy, just good affordable oil with a decent rep.
Well since your a "Lazy AE owner" ;) I would steer to full synthetic, then you only have one oil change per season ...unless you log mega miles or are one of the lucky ones with a long riding season :)

Not only is it OK to ride a brand new bike all day but I think it might be mandatory! :)

Seriously, enjoy the ride and do as others have suggested with respect to varying RPM etc. Don't forget the first oil change after a day or two of riding - it comes quickly. I think I am on my 5th oil change this year (25,000 miles). 82,000 on the bike and I have always used the Rotella synthetic 5W40 in the blue jug.

Getting ready to take off and thank for the thumbs up, I'll enjoy the day more becasue of it.

I wasn't going to wait until 5K to switch to synthetic, now I guess I will wait, what should I use for my first change then?

Anything you want; as long as it isn't an "Energy Conserving" car oil. No issues with switching to synthetic at this point IMHO but others may disagree. Not a big deal as long as you do that first oil change when its required.

Note: Its not a bad idea to have the dealer do the initial service, despite the cost. That way they can take responsibility for a factory over-tightened oil drain plug etc. Pretty sure the dealer would use the regular Yammalube.

Most professionals in the industry will say the wait for synthetic to be hog wash. I'm with them, and remember any high end car from a Caddy up to a Ferrari will all come preloaded (from the factory) with full synthetics. There's a reason for this and all of my 4-stroke machines (since '01) have been full synthetic from the 1st factory change. I never have had any oil level usage/droppage in any of the machines and performance has been top on all.

So the seating with petroleum vs. sythn is pure BS but you do as you wish.
