Peaks has a pretty good restaurant that should be open on the 22nd & 23rd. Looks out at the lake and sits at foot of the Peaks of Otter. Sunday lunch usually pretty crowded but Sat shouldn't be to bad. There is also a lodge might be full at this late date-no phones or tv's but quiet as could be expected. Anyhoo group could go down 43 to Buchanan, but not too many choices there-a couple small family owned and a pizza place. I have been asleep at the wheel and did not catch dates and will not be able to ride that weekend as I've got a weekend in Banner Elk, NC planned. Man, I'm bummed! This whole area down here is GREAT for riding and ya'll are gonna have a blast. If I can be of any help or you have any questions I'll be glad to try and assist. Shields

Is the Peaks of Otter restaurant close to the Peaks of Otter Visitor Center? I'll be riding up from TN to meet the group and my Mapsource software doesn't show the restaurant...only the visitor center. It also shows that the BRP has 2 intersections w/ 43 abt 4-5 miles apart.

Mike, Peaks of Otter dining facilities are located in the Visitor Center. I'm thinking that may not be the best place for us to meet for lunch. I'm starting to doubt if they're open for business this time of the year.

Also, FYI... the visitor center is at about mile marker 84 plus or minus... near the eastern portion of Rte 43.

UPDATE: I just saw Shields post on the first page. He says that the Peaks of Otter restaurant should be open... so, let's keep the meeting spot there, ok? It'll be easy to find for any "out of towners". Sound good?

Shields, I'm really sorry to hear that you can't go. That's a bummer! I'm sure that there will be other meets. Hey, grab the reins & plan the next meet! I'm sure that'll be appreciated!

Thanx, Heidi.

And, rode some NC roads w/ SnP and Lady SnP yesterday...I think everyone @ EOM will be pleased w/ SnP's selection of routes. It was quite a morning workout. Unfortunately, 2 sections of the BRP are still closed but should be open early May. During one stop, SnP was commenting on the lack of "chicken strips" on his brand new rear tire. And, that's with a passenger.

Peaks of Otter is a great place to meet,,

there is a seperate visitor center across from the restaurant ,, plenty of parking at both sites ,, also ,, down 43 from the parkway is a twisty nasty little road with a gas station at the end in Buchanan ,, then you can go on to Eagle Rock from there ,, up 220 to Iron Gate ,, and then over into WV and pick up 311 back to Roanoke ,, pick up BRP again via some twisty local roads and on to Tuggles Gap Dinner and Motel (junction RT8 and BRP) or into Floyd ,, then down 221 to 58 in Hillsville ,, or RT8 (very twisty decender, I like going to the end a turning around and going back up to the Parkway ,, just me) to Stuart and the boring part of 58 to the BRP near Mabry Mill ,,

I'm game for whatever. One thing that I do care about... instead of riding south towards Hillsville I'd rather head northwest. I've got a long way to go to and from as it is. Roanoke or North is great! Even the guy from Tennessee won't have to ride as far as me.

Heidi, I haven't looked at a map but, if we ended up in Floyd, VA (rather than Marlinton) at the end of the ride on Sat, would that shorten your trip home?

I'm not looking at a map... but I'd say not really... unless from Floyd we went northerly back towards where we came from. Marlinton is further west but we'd be riding back towards the BRP (which is easterly) on Sunday... depends on the route. If you go too far east of Floyd you'll be out of the mountains... & that's no fun.

Anyway that I do it I have a hell of a ride, regardless. Getting down towards Hillsville is getting far out of the way, though. My rule of thumb... Virginia is sort of triangular. The mountains run along the western side of that triangle. I live all the way to the eastern point of that triangle.

Unfortunately for me to get to the closest mountains is right at 200 miles... & that is where we met last time... Waynesboro... right in the center of the western 1/2 of the triangle.

I'm ok with riding further. If it's decided to ride way out of my way... then I'll suck it up and go... but being the furthest out & the fact that I want to ride w/ you guys... I'm hoping that you guys will keep it within reason for me.

Alo, it looks as though we have what... 4 people that want to meet? That's enough for me!

Ok guys... It looks like 4 of us??? or maybe 3??? I guess that it's time to finalize this plan. David has suggested riding out Rte 311 into WV. This sounds good. Maybe he can throw a couple more ideas out there? Maybe something like 311 to 92 & out 39 west? I'm not familiar at all with any hotels out that way... or even if there is any! I know about the Marlinton Inn. Any more suggestions?

Heidi - doesn't look like Lorie and I will make this weekend. Too much to catch up on around here and I gotta get my new tires on the bike. Didn't realize how worn they were until I put the new ones next to those on the bike!

Sorry to hear about that Jim. Please tell the wifey hello from me & I'll be seeing ya'... probably sooner that later.

Brazos Parker... have you made your plans?

Heidi

Plans? I was just going to get on the bike and ride...but, it looks like the group is dwindling to nothing at this point. I was looking forward to meeting a bunch of other FJR pilots but looks like that's not going to happen on this one. Wha'cha think? Postpone?

Just an idea-and this is mostly selfish on my part, but why not pick another weekend. I can't make this weekend due to family b-day committments, but since I live on this side of the state and enjoyed last group ride I for one would really like a repeat. Anyhoo Heidi if ya'll don't make it this time lets do it sometime in the future, soon! Shields.

oh ok! Just get on and go, then. Sounds good to me!

The group really hasn't dwindled... there wasn't a large group of people to begin with.

If you guys would like to cancel that'll be fine with me. I'll probably go riding somewhere, regardless.

Just post up what people would like to do, ok?

Heidi, think I'll cancel out on this weekend.  I'll try to make the next Old Dominion Riders Group get-together.
Ok... I guess that due to low interest or conflicts of interest the meet for this weekend is being canceled. Hope to see ya'll soon!
