Well it looks as though earlier in October for the leaf peeper is better than late in the month/early November, according to our WV friend who says the leaves are already starting to turn. Let's scope a date & then we'll work out lodging. What ye' say??? By the way... the title of this thread is just the first thing I thought of. All are definitely welcomed w/ open arms.

Heidi,

I keep getting an error when I try to vote for a date. I was going to select Oct. 14-15, but pretty much any of the dates are OK with me.

Hmmm, I got an error when I tried to vote, too. I just figured it was my crap computer since I've had similar events w/ it. Me thinks I did something wrong? Let me look into it. Gonna' contact one of the board admins.

In the mean time I guess just post up your preference. I've got paper & pad to talley all votes.

Heidi

Andddd... I forgot to say, my vote happens to be for the same weekend... but also flexible if another is picked. THat makes 4 votes f/ October 14/15.

It's looking pretty unanimous right now. Kewl!

Thanks for the fix Travis.

Provided that the people that posted their vote didn't put in a vote on the poll, it looks like 6 for October 14-15 & 1 vote f/ October 21-22. I think that in all fairness this should be left up for a couple-few days, yes?

And off topic... spklbuk, you're from WV? You know, there has been talk of next year's EOM being held there. Would you have any interest in hosting? I'd be glad to lend a hand where needed. Maps, ROUTE PLANNING/SCOUTING, etc

And group, sorry for the brief hijack.

Heidi

Heidi,

Twould indeed be a fine place for an EOM. I would be willing to do my best. Was unable to attend in Boone this year and I am an FNG (to the FJR but a veteran yamaha rider), so would certainly need guidance from those in the know. We can talk more on the leaf peeper.

Jim (spklbuk)

It looks as though the weekend will end up being Oct 14-15. There are 7 votes f/ it & 2 f/ the 21-22.

I feel that it's a slam dunk but gonna' leave it up in the air for one more day? How's that?

We need to make some reservations f/ hotels. From what I understand, the hotels fill up pretty fast for leaf peeping days.

The lady from Monterey called me about reservations/group rates but I wasn't here to get the phone call. Waiting for her to call back. BUT if she doesn't call w/in the next day I will call her.

After all Monterey is just an idea. After the hotel is decided on we get to make the decision where to meet! Oh, decisions, decisions...

I'll probably just ride in on the group somewhere along their route since I've got a long way to the mountains.

So, be thinking about roads. I'm calling 250... it has an overlook on the Virginia side... east of Monterey.

Jim, do you know some good roads w/ room for us to pull over & leaf gawk? Is there anywhere on 39 to pull over? Maybe do a stroll down to Lake Moomaw? How about Rte 150 outside of Marlinton? Are you familiar? Isn't that Highlands Pkwy, or something like that. Never been on it, yet but hear that it's sweeper hell (which is good)... or 219? THat might be a good one.

What say ye'?

Actually, there's a motor lodge in Marlinton... Marlinton Motor Inn. I suppose that would be a consideration, too.

If that's the weekend, then, chances are it will just be a Sunday-only ride for me, if at all. Wife will just be coming back from a week in New Orleans on Friday night and I don't think she'll be up for turning around and doing a 2-day ride. So, if I make it, I might just be solo on Sunday. I'll keep an eye on this thread.

btw - my vote was for 21-22

That'd be a bummer Randy. I'm thinking that possibly the leaves will be falling off the trees in droves by the 3rd weekend. Our friendly neighborhood WV guy says they're turning now.

Not that riding thru falling leaves isn't fun... 'cause it's cool as hell! But beware of leaf clumps people... that can be some slippery shtuff.

right with ya Randy... fwiw, mine was the other 21-22 vote.

(Even though I think that Heidi is right about the leaves hitting their peak before that 3rd weekend).

My bride works at Mortons BMW in Fredericksburg and the 14th is their annual Oktoberfest Open House. No way in the world will she be able to get away early. And actually, I want to check out the festivities as well.

Soooo... another in a string of unfortunate disconnects, I'm just not having much luck with schedule synchronicity and my FJR buds this year. Hopefully that will change in the future.

Ya'll travel safe, ride well, and have a blast.

regards

Patrick

I just got off of the phone with Karen, the owner of the Montvalle Inn in Monterey, VA. She rented to a motorcycle group that's in town for the night. Looks as though she is all but booked for the night that we are planning. She's got 2 rooms left. Sooo, will definitely be looking at some others. Just letting you guys know whassuupp, ok?

Heidi

When I said starting to turn - just beginning, still mostly green, but the forecast is valley frost tomorrow night, so things usually speed up from there. Colors will likely still be good the third weekend, so either weekend would work peeperwise. Wet leaves will be slippery but it leaves falling like rain usually occurs later around Halloween. Would it be wise to let the weather forecasters decide??? - if a last minute thing would work, understanding that rooms might be the kicker, or is that too risky???

This suggested route assumes Marlinton area for rooms. South from rt 250/219 intersect at Huttonsville and at Valley Head take Rt 15 S(W?) to Webster Spings across Gauley Mtn and on to Craigville -- a few nice sets of twisties and a bunch of scenery w/ some pull offs. Rt 39 to Richwood - thru the Mon national forest and it attendant leaves to top of Kennison Mtn (Cranberry Glades) and Rt 150 Highland Scenic Highway with vista pull offs galore. It is sweeper hell, but you won't notice b/c the red spruce high elevations make you giddy anyhow. A cruise up Snowshoe Mtn. would make for some nice views from the top and its sort of on the route. Rt 39 off Back Creek Mtn to MooMaw country and thru Goshen Pass just north of Lexington would definitely be the way to go on Sunday for those wishing to pick up I-64/81 home.

Understand, these ridges are large and high enough to make their own weather - it can be clear as a bell one mile and the next, you are riding in the clouds, but the views are second to none when you can see.

Jim, I just followed your route in the atlas & this looks like a perfect run. I've done quite a few of these roads myself & can attest to the beauty. Man, I'll bet the trees will be gorgeous going thru Goshen Pass at the scenic overlook. How about we make this the route? All in favor say ay!

#1 - AY!

Also, to address your concerns of the weather. I'm not sure what to say here. I hear that reservations during this season are hard to make/get. I usually fly by the seat of my pants were hotels are concerned... but that is with 2 or 4 people. I think there's gonna' be a few more than that on this excursion. Also, I will usually go on my trip regardless of the weather but peeping would SUCK in bad weather. How about we find a place that will accept cancellations 24-48 hours in advance. Make our reservations and keep a close eye on the weather right up until cancellation time. If it looks like hell... then we make the rain date the next weekend.

How does this work for everyone?

And addressing an area to stay for the night... it looks like the largest town about 1/2 way through this route is Summersville. I'm going to Google Summersville & see what we have going on there lodging-wise... or are you aware of a place to stay, Jim? Is there places to stay around Gauley Mtn? I'll bet so since they have a large rafting population.

UPDATE: I just googled hotels & it looks like there are a few. #1 Super 8... not only are they fairly inexpensive, the reviews for the place didn't look all that favorable. Super 8

#2 Comfort Inn.. always nice. I forgot to look but I'm sure that they have some sort of continental breakfast type thing. Prices start at $78.00... not good for a person who has no roomates. Comfort Inn

#3 Best Western... this would be my pick. They have a hot continental breakfast... & looking thru their site I actually saw a room for $59.00! Vat a deal! There's even coffee makers in the rooms! Anyway, I've got a link... take a look/see

Anyway, this is what I found on a qquick search. There is likely more lodging in the area. Does anyone have ideas?

I've stayed several times at the Best Western Mountain View in Covington, VA. Fairly cheap, average rooms, so-so restaurant and lounge on premises, gas station next door. Not much to endorse the place, but oh those roads...

cafn8d, the Best Western in question is the one in Summersville, WV. Are you familiar with this area? Can use advice on the area.

Also, so whaddya think of spklbuk's route? Are you innie?

I've counted up the vote for a ride date-

It seems that:

1 for Oct 7, 8

8 for Oct 14,15

2 for Oct 21, 22

The winning date is October 14, 15. If the weather craps out for that weekend let's make it the next.

Now, is making a reservation somewheres. Is there any suggestions besides what I've put up?
