Say hay folks: I would like to repeat a ride I took in the early '70s.After the Army and several failed loves, I left Williamsburg Va and rode to the folks home in Lancaster Ca. I lost the maps along with most memories long ago and I don't recall the route or the roads, not even the cities I rode through. So I'm looking for maps from that era. T'was the early 70's, not later than 74. Anyone have suggestions or alternate resources? I dont recall any interstates, there was rain and Texas lasted all day. There were also bridges and hills. The specific anecdotes require beer as a lubrecant.

Thanks

'fraid I can't help you much, but I did plug a route into S&T, avoiding interstates. Looks like there's a good possiblility you might have taken 50 all the way across, but there are so many alternative highways, especially in the east, it's hard to say unless you could recall some of the towns you passed through.

Good to see you posting... last I saw anything from you was shortly after you biffed. Are you going to to WFO? If you are, I'll see to it that you're properly lubed up at the end of the day.

I bet that doesn't get taken out of context.

Context? What context? I live in Berkeley, well outside of any known contextual reality.

Deffinatly planning on WFO. I'll accept, greatfully of course, the coolant and companionship. Thanks.

Here is a link to a map of the US in 1970 - no road names though, just the roads:

1970 Online Atlas

These maps have highway numbers :)

1970 Wall Maps with Highway Numbers - Regional

And this 1970 Map from National Geographic may be the most useable yet

1970 Natl Gegraphic Map easier to use

Tinker, I still ride some roads I rode on a transcontinental ride in the '60s. Some have changed: new bridges, fewer ferries, town by-passes, bigger/better, etc. -- but, many are still there. O'Vale provided some good stuff for research. There are Old-Map 'net sites to peruse, too. I have some '30s Conoco maps that are a real good source for old-road dual-sport riding (some of those old alignments are still there and do-able). Also, are places like The Lincoln Hiway Assoc. which is going to celibrate the 100th anniversary of the first trans-con route -- soon. Good luck.

Interesting that you mention the Lincon Highway. I'm planning to ride the Lincon this May/June. I'm expecting to do a loop, SF to NYC then down to VA and across through GA, TN and AZ. The entire plan is in the air at the moment. I just cought up on the Regional meets this year. Canada, WFO, SWFOG all scream for attention. Difficult decisions ahead.

Just another case of so many meets, & so little time to do them all....Tinker.....maybe you should pick some that you haven't done before.....that could trim it down a bit  ....

B-b-b-b--but we'd miss seeing his smiling face at WFO. :( OTH, 2007 would be the one to plan for since it appears to be morphing into the Nat'l event. :yahoo:

No, no, no! I'll not miss WFO. I did that once and I will never forgive myself. I would have been one of a select few to have been at all WFO's, now I'm just part of the pack undre the almost heading. I'll be at WFO. Never mis an opportunity to ride in Utah. Gorgeous country, nice people and only a bit stranger than at home so I fit right in. In addition Mad Mike and I have to organize a group photo of the Biffers Team. I'd like to make the Canada meett in may. I could tie it in witn my Lincon Highway plans and I could make the return leg the '74 ride. Might be a bit difficult to make stops in VA, GA, TN and AZ. Planning is criticle, even if only a momentary fantisy.
