I just finished my 1st "Big" outting on my FJR a few weeks ago - From Rochester NY to Cleveland OH - about 250 miles each way. Thanks to all helped me out with "What should I have onboard?"

I am planning a 3 day jaunt from Rochester NY to Augusta ME to visit my Dad's final resting place in the Maine Veterans Cemetary. I will be spending 2 nights on the road in New Hampshire and Vermont. Since I always garage my bike I've never given much thought to over night "security".

Is there something I should purchase to keep my Feejer safe and sound will I'm staying in hotels on the road?

Thanks in advance.

When I travel on the road, I ask the front desk where is the safest place to park the bike. I've had them let me park in front of the doors, inside overhangs, and even garages!

I use a disk lock on the left front disk, lock the bars to the left, and go online to see if my insurance is up to date! :p

Enjoy your trip!

:)

I think most people just use a disc lock and some even have alarms built right in.HERE

Other than that I cover it at night just so it doesn't draw attention to kids or thieves etc. And if i can Ill try to park under an overhang, or if its a motel I'll try to park right under the stoop so a van cant pull up next to it and hoist it up and be gone.

Yep, park in front of a window and near a light. Even if you can't actually see your bike, the bad guys don't know that for sure.

Also, take as many things inside with you overnight as possible. I never leave electronics on the bike overnight.

For short stops, like meals, I try to park where I can see the bike and I usually throw my jacket over the windscreen and dash to cover the electronics.

In addition to a Kryptonite disc lock, I cover the whole works with a Dowco Guardian bike cover and strap it down. Also, since it's there, ignition cutoff switch to 'off'.

What the others said.

Park it close to your room and if that is not possible park in front of the lobby in a well lit area.

I use a disc lock (just do not forgot to take it off before motoring away), lock the bars, and have insurance.

I traveled cross country last year and did a tour of Michigan this year, I have never had a problem.

Prep your bike, carry the things you need for the trip and have enough money available for plane fare home incase it is stolen.

You can't worry about that stuff too much or it will make you crazy!

Do talk to the clerks about where you can, or should park your bike. Especially if you are not staying at a place with the parking just outside the room. After that, this isn't all that much of a problem. A little common sense and a cheap AutoZone or Wal-Mart cover go a long way. Out of sight, out of mind. (Just don't get a cover that says "Harley Davidson" on the side!)

I've never had anyone look under my cover that I could tell after a night at a hotel. If you're the only bike at a hotel, they will often let you tuck into the covered area in front of the office if you can park the bike out of the way of normal customer traffic.

Have fun on the trip and have a peaceful visit with your Dad. He may not be around, but he's always with you just the same. Thanks to him for his service to our country.

He was a great man - he served in the Navy for 23 years - WWII, Korea, and Vietnam in which he was awarded two Gallantry Crosses. In 23 years he only did 18 months of Shore Duty, the rest of the time he spent out at sea on destroyers - sure do miss the heck out of him - he passed away Oct 20 2006.

Thanks for all the great repsonses - I sure do love having a sport touring bike to go to all these great places. My last bike was a cruiser that wasn't much fun after a couple hours and made my back hurt for days after so I never left town with it. With my Feej I keep looking at the map looking for places to go and reasons why I need to go there.

All great suggestions... but the best suggestion? Good Insurance... always carry good insurance. No matter what, if they want it they got it. All these suggestions are good deterrents, though. I use no disk lock or such. I am in fact very choosy about where I park my bike... & of course I do use the onboard steering lock which, I understand is close to useless. Ask hotel clerks about good spots. Very often they will let you park right outside the front door of the office.

I myself try to find hotels that have parking right outside my door. That is my favorite type of hotel.

Be honest w/ yourself, though. Locks keep honest people honest. If they want your bike, they'll have it.

At home, of course my bike lives inside.

Thats why I have tent camped for the last 25 years. You sleep right next to the bike at night.

I was considering that possibility - but I'm spoiled and not a big fan of 'roughing it' - crap - I hope you sleep on the right side of the bike in case of an illusive FJR side stand malfunction.

I have used a cover for the last 25 years and never had a problem. I also ask about parking and will pass up a mptel if I don't like the look of the neighborhood. If I have to I'll go to a more expensive motel with better security.

Xena disc lock (the screamer), handlebars locked & a cover over it.....if they don't what it is.....they probably won't think about stealing it.....& insurance.....that's a given.... :good: .....
