I once parked in a little asphalt area under a motel stairway overhang so no car could bump into my bike. I thought taht was clever except the asphalt caved in under the side stand like a sinkhole. I don't think a plate or crushed can would have prevented the tipover because there was a pretty large void unter the asphalt. Now I avoid areas like that unless they are concrete, but I still try to park in a brightly lit area near the motel office if possible. I lock the ignition, nothing else.

Best advice on the motel (previous posts) is to talk to the desk clerk. When I arrived at my motel in Burbank they had 3 perps handcuffed across the street with 4 police cars with lights going. My puckerstring got real tight for sure. I pretty much knew that the neighborhood had changed in the past 25 years.

Anyhow I asked the desk clerk what he could do to help keep my bike safe. He said it was a tough neighborhood and told me to park it under the security light just outside the glass doors and he would also make sure the next shift checked it every hour. I used a disk lock and locked the forks as well. I've heard about snapping the fork locks but I figure this:

1. If it's a professional thief, he's going to get the bike no matter what I do. Have good theft insurance.

2. The best I can do is slow down an amateur. Disc lock, lights etc.

3. My CCW permit is no good in Kalifornia (as is any other State's CCW there) and so I don't carry when I ride there, it just isn't worth it.

Enjoy the ride. Thanks to your dad for his service.
