Open window, grab computer and peripherals and toss out open window. Hopefully, it is a 2nd floor window. Better, if said second floor window was above a lake.
Not techy, but that's my solution to ****** up modern technology. ;)

What date is the computer set for? If it is a curent date try setting it back a couple of years.

I think thats a valid point, however Fencer is not the type of person to just say it quit and give up. For a guy that rams around on a Bobcat and builds Fences all day he's pretty technical.
Now don't get me wrong, when it comes to riding motorcycles in the rain he's a complete puss!! ;) When the radar starts showing activity you can count on him to be inside eating Chocolate covered Cherries and and watching Judge Judy!!

Thanks for the takniul koodos. I leerned alot frum coledje, and gradjeated with a 7.0 pga no, wait thats a .7.

Well, JW, The rain is just a habit with me, put up the tools and toys so they don't get 40lbs of mud in um or I get lekrticuted

Here's another thought. I'm guessing that the current Keyboard is ps/2 style connection (small round plug). Go pick up a nice cheap ($10-$15) USB keyboard and plug that in rather then the current. If this works, then there ya go. I can't say for certain that the MB is bad as a whole, but it certainly sounds like maybe there is a issue with the i/o controller when it actually come to being driven by software. This is why it's working when your in the bios and other area's before the OS fully loads.
So a USB keyboard could buy you some time, but overall, get off that box as soon as you can.
Yes, both mouse and keypas are PS2 ports

I picked up a USB mouse and plan to get a USB pad just for ***** and giggles to see if it is a controller issue in the next few days.

Go figure, A puter I built back in '92, rebuilt several times to upgrade, with the last config as a P II 400 Mhtz running Win 98 still runs fine. Its my 5 yo's puter

So one of the misconceptions when keyboard and mouse stop working is to assume that either those items or the connections went bad. Well the keyboard and mouse are the only external input devices, if the machine locks up because of a memory or motherboard issue the most common description is: "Keyboard and mouse quit!"

Now, But wait it works in safe mode or sporatically in normal mode? Understand that in safe mode you are loading a very basic set of drivers and utilities, which means that you not utilizing nearly as much memory and bandwidth on the system bus. Sometimes a system will run for hours in safe mode but will not boot at all in normal mode.

Just food for thought, given the age and description of Fencer's machine I'm also voting for throwing the sucker out the window. :)

Disclaimer: Yes I'm a computer nerd. Yes I have a bunch of paper to prove to someone that I actually know WTF i'm doing. (A+, Network +, MCSE) No I don't a $hit if you don't agree with me, most of my experience came from working computers not sitting around reading nerd books. :glare:

Now that sounds like fun!! :clapping: I'll dress like Steve Jobs, all black of course!!

I found that with a new motherboard, with XP, and the chip is an Intel dual core, that the IDE hard drive was not supported - I reloaded the OS numerous times, it would run briefly with all sort of wierd problems like you describe, did a little research, bought one of the new hard drives that is not IDE, it is serial ATA - and that hard drive allowed the OS to run and everything has been fine -

so it was a conflict between the MB chipset/processer and the OS and hard drive type? In any case, not even sure if it is helpful, but you never know.

I have the pieces of a USB headset in my bin next to me, just as a warning to other hardware that I CAN (and have) decommissioned malfunctioning hardware the permanent way (no lake under the window, and the 3 ft drop to the ground did far less damage than my right foot  )
