You will find that there are various parts on the bike that may have had tape residue on them and that goes for the exhaust too. I have uncrated over 500 bikes myself from various manufacturers. To the best of my knowledge cosmolene was last used in world war two to preserve metal parts. Most dealers today detail(super clean) the bikes before delivery. Yours may not have gotten that due to the rush delivery. Keep an eye on the exhaust though the bike shouldn't be smoking on one side. Notify your dealer so they can correct any problems.

I bought a new GL1800 from a dealer here in Denver. They had it shipped here from CA in a crate. Put it together and cleaned it up real nice, but after several washings the gooey stuff was seeping out of cracks and crannies. They said it was cosmoline. Whatever it was, it was messy.

And yes, my FJR did smell pretty foul out of the crate.

They all do that. And it won't go away in time.

Still, after 12K miles, I pull into the drive and do a U-turn in front of the garage so I can back in. Every time, while pedaling backwards into the garage with the engine idling, I smell this weird smell. Kind of a cross between cinnamon and fish. No, maybe it's more like Comet cleanser and chicken. I don't know, but it's there.

For most, though evidently not for you...

Oh yeah...
My 06 stinks pretty good when ever I ride in the rain, and thereafter for a little while. I think wet road grime gets somewhere and cooks.
ROFL!

My ZZR stinks something horrible in a heavy rain too. I'm talking billowing clouds of noxious fumes that fogs up my visor with toxic steam whenever I have to come to a stop in a downpour! The rain just seems to run down inside the fairing and wash all the road filth onto the hot headers. Come to think of it, it stinks a bit after a hot hard dry ride too. I consider it "character".

My wife's '04 FJR has a bit of strange smell when hot too, kind of a plasticy smell.

I've come to the conclusion that bikes are just sort of smelly most of the time. But then, I recall how bad I used to smell back in the day when I was into bicycling, after a hundred miles or so, so I guess I can't criticize my bike for getting a bit ripe after a ride. ;)
