This is what happens when you exceed the redline by a thousand rpm on a 920 cc Yamaha Roadracer one too many times. An offering to the god of speed!

Just when you thought  ...."rev limiter, we don't need no stinking rev limiter" :nono: ...."Surprise!".... :rip_1: ....

Nice paper weight you got there, gonna just polish it up or will you have it chromed. <_<

I saw one of those before from a Lycoming O-320. The story was happened on take off. Was at the normal 2700 rpm redline and just started shakin' real bad.

Need details- Intake valve that broke off and punched thru the piston head? That is what it looks like to me. I would think that the valve would break before pushing thru? I would more expect the valve to be in pieces and the piston to be all gouged up, but not punctured?

Reminds me of my grandpa’s old Avery 40-80 tractor. It dropped a valve and pressed it into the piston. They replaced all the valves in it when they took it apart. I still have one of the intake valves, over 3 inches in diameter.

That was a heck of an engine. It was a 4 cylinder opposed setup. 8 inch bore and an 8 inch stroke. 1608 cubic inches of thunder. Put out 80 horsepower at 500 rpm. Now that’s a torque monster.

In actuality the bike continued to run on one cylinder and was driven back to the pits. When the spark plug was removed it was apparent the machine was done for the day. The bike was very competitive having gone on a diet. Originally was 510lbs and was raced at 380. I used a stock crank and lightened rods with fly cut stock pistons. Original hp was 50 but I dynoed this engine at 82 at 9000 rpm. It was a 1982 xv920 and it won the state championship with a 210 lb rider me, in 1986. It won again in 1987 with a 135lb rider. It was the last air cooled twin to win the class here in California. I still own the bike and two others.

glad you cleared that up. was scratching my head trying to figure out what Yami was a 920. Was thinking either a bored/stroked YZF750/R7 or destroked R1.

Never seen a YZF750/R7 or R1 with only 2 valve reliefs in the piston, well 3 now! lol

These keep popping up everywhere...... Not that they are anything to be proud of.
