I was at the dealer today wrapping up details on my purchase. He offered me a "service" plan where I can take the bike in twice a year for 3 years for all service. The price is $1300.00. This includes the break-in service. Thoughts?

I'm also curious what type of helmets most of the riders here ride. I bought a Shoei full-face helmet. I like the concept of the modular helmets where the front part can be flipped upwards, but not sure if that is a feature I would use so I didn't get one. My helmet has a blue, white, grey, & black design... but now I'm thinking I should've got just a one-color design that may stand out easier like an orange or red or yellow.

The dealer gave me a discount on clothing so I picked up a modular jacket made by Power Trip, the Power Shift model. My concern is that it's made in China, and, the protective parts are foam and not plastic... shouldn't the protective parts be made of plastic?? Anyone here have experience with Power Trip jackets? Anyone here put reflective tape on the back of their jackets?

Yes, I confess, I haven't ridden much and I've always borrowed bikes and equipment from friends.

Depending on how much you ride (and it sounds like 'not much',) that price will cover you for one TBS and 6 oil changes and that's about it.

The real major item is at 26,000 miles (valve check - notice I said check, because it would be rare to neded an adjust).

Spend $380 or so dollars and buy a 4 year YES (warranty extension) from D&H. Then buy an oil filter wrench, some oil and Yamaha filters and a vacume stick (I use the morgan carbtune). Add in a couple of torque wrenches and the adapter to adjust the head bearings and except for tire changes you're good to go for the next 26K.

Helmets that meet both (not either) DOT and SNELL ratings work for me. They have to comfortable and close fitting. Brand name per-se is unimportant. Hopefully the one you choose will be quiet. I use in-ear headphones (Westone UM2) to protect my hearing and to connect to my intercom.

Can't comment on your riding jacket. Sorry.

Ditto on the YES program...

Shoei makes good helmets and I would not worry much about the color as the fit.

And many jackets use "foam" not plastic. You should find out if it is CE approved padding or just plain old foam rubber.

Most stuff is made in China nowadays , even from big name makers, so I would not be worried about that aspect.

I prefer the Fieldsheer and Firstgear line, but anything that provides some kind of protection is better than nothing. Good old fashion leather still gets my vote..

Welcome to the forum.

Service package? IIRC, guys here have talked about the 600 mile service costing $600. Bramfrank is correct, if you don't ride much that might be a little steep, however, you might find the FJR soooo much fun you will be riding more so the package might be a good deal for you. Much depends on how much you can do yourswelf....

Definitely buy the YES from D&H. Their contact information shoudl be listed in the "Bin O Facts" you were encouraged to read when yo signed up for the forum.

My riding gear can be found on this link. Big $$$'s but I ride alot.

As others have said, it depends on how much you ride.

I purchased a 3 year VIP service plan in Austin Texas that includes:

1) All scheduled service / unlimited miles.

2) Two new tires (both rears of course)  !

3) Two batteries

4) 6 off service oil changes (probably never use this one) as I can't see changing my oil every 2000 miles.

So far in a little over a year, I have 27,000 miles on my bike and I couldn't be any happier with the service I have gotten from Woods Fun Center or the bike!!!

Best Regards,

Shane

P.S. The price I paid was $1300.

$1300 is to much for what they're offering, like others have said you'll have minimal maintenence issues with the fjr and if you have ANY mechanical ability and read up here a little you can do almost anything on your bike except the valve adjustment at 26-k.So if you don't ride a whole lot all you're paying for is oil changes and little else.

Same thing the dealer tried to sell me when I bought mine. They also tried to tell me that unless they did all the scheduled maintenance the warranty would be void. No sale. Did I mention it was PCP in south Sacramento?

"PCP in south Sacramento"

I never did any, but maybe it wasn't as plentiful when I there in the early 90's :drag:

$1300 for 6 servicings isn't a bad deal...but you may find you ride the FJR a lot more than other bikes. I guess you would just have to pop full price for the 3rd and 4th servicings of the year ;) Is Excel the dealership you are working with?

Really though, I have owned the FJR 2 years and 4 months and have had it serviced 13 times. I am pretty fanatic about his, I do much more than is required, but even at discount prices, your plan would have saved me some dough. I don't do my own maintenance on the FJR. I just don't want to.

For helmet discussions see the Parts section:

https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?showforum=57

and search "Helmet"

Same section for jackets.

Next, have you ridden enough to be safe? Do you know about "looking through the turn to your destination"

If not, take a Motorcycle Safety Foundation class in your area (MSF class). This might help you from killing yourself as you follow Bear Creek down the canyon to Morrison. (Yep, I grew up on that road.)

I bought the yamaha pit pass which gives me unlimited service for 3 years. I can't remember exactly what I paid for it but I just had my 16k service done and it was 9 hours of labor (over $900). I have my oil changed every 2000 miles and I also get my tires mounted and balanced free.
