Thursday this week I'm going to ride up for a Friday morning fork and Wilbers rebuild. A few questions for you locals.

Thinking of staying at the Budget Inn in Woodburn to avoid the noisy bigger bucks joints near the interstate. Open to any motels suggestions within 45 minutes of their shop.

With 4-5 hours to kill Friday is there anything to do within walking distance of the shop or just bring a book.

Gotta test the rebuild, eh? Any problems with taking 224 to Detriot and 22 down to 20 and over to Bend while headed back to CA?

Thanks! Bug

Looking forward to the responses, since I'm having exactly the same done to my FJR the Monday following WFO. Except that we have a place to stay 6 miles away -- Judy's sister lives there.

Jeez neighbor, let me go by the sister's and drink all their liquor, kick the dog and piss on the lawn just like the real bikers do.

Oh, I'm on a Yamaha- never mind

There isn't much to do within walking distance but Dave and Ben are great hosts and don't mind a bit if you are looking over their shoulders during the rebuild(s). I have watched the process twice and have never been bored, if you have any questions about spring rates, damping, and suspension in general then that is the time to ask.

It would be a couple mile walk, but since you have the time you might consider going downtown. If you like history, Oregon City has some options. You might try the McLoughlin House https://www.mcloughlinhouse.org/ and checkout the promenade with a view of Willamette Falls https://www.orcity.org/parksandrecreation/m...ghlin-promenade Definately get a iced mocha at Dutch Bros 1002 Main Street, Oregon City, OR‎ - (503) 650-2469 I prefer a triple shot: chocolately heaven in a cup.

Your route home sounds like a winner. Stop at the Sno Cap in Sisters Oregon for an ice cream. On the left just as you get onto main street.

There is an Econolodge on Mcloughlin Blvd, (also known as 99E), just a few miles North from the Oregon City exit off I-205, (exit #9). Take the exit, turn Right, about 3 miles down on the right hand side. There is also a Budget Inn closer on the same road, and it's probably cheaper, but not in as good condition.

As to what to do while the work is done, there is a movie theater just across from the business park GP is in. Multi-plex, so probably something playing you might like, but not until 11 am or so. BenchMade Knives is just down the road. No tours, but they do have a factory store.

300 Beavercreek Rd.

Oregon City, OR 97045

8:30am-5:00pm Monday-Friday

No factory tours at this time.

The new factory store is now open!

Toll Free: 1-800-800-7427

Not a lot else around, a couple of bars, some fast food, Bi-mart/Fred Meyer/Good Will/Auto Zone just down the road.

Thanks, most likely what I'll do but worried they will talk me into bringing up my FZ1.

Crap there goes the new diet, but sounds good!

I have been there three times and never had to leave the place, except to go to lunch with the guys. It is great entertainment to watch and talks. They don't mind.

If you go south out of Bend you will go past my place. Give a shout if you need anything 541-536-8556.

If you have the time on the way back, might as well go in the North entrance of Crater Lake National Park, ride around and head out the South entrance and head South to Cali-land.

Thanks, I'll keep your number. I'm hoping I have enough tread left on the PR's for this ride. Guess I should slow down which isn't hard to do with a 55 mph :angry2:

Thanks Shiny, I do enjoy the riding the Crater Lakes Hwy but I'm thinking I'll bug out of Bend early to beat the heat (gen 1 you know) and get down to Ca 89 so I can ride home in the Sierra's and a bit cooler temps.

Excellent choice taking 224. I returned home from central Oregon that way (in my cage in the rain) a few weeks ago. It was mostly repaved last summer and is now mostly beautiful new pavement. A county-mountie was sitting very well-hidden beside the road just over a crest of a hill between Estacada and North Fork Resevoir. Once you get past the old Breittenbush ranger station you "should" be ok down to Detroit.

Once you reach the junction of 22 and 20 you might want to consider dropping down to 126 and taking 242 over McKenzie Pass over to Sisters if you've never been that way. It's like a drive across the moon. Be sure to stop at the observation tower to look around.

If I wasn't headed to the BMWMOA Rally in Redmond on Friday I'd drop by and say hi. You do know the IBA is having a pizza party at the rally Friday night and Lord Kneebone is presiding? But don't expect to find a room anywhere near Redmond or Bend.

What...cooler by 5 degrees?

Some of us can only aspire to riding a real bike and living the lifestyle that comes with it. But . . . while I've never met her brother in law, I understand that Clyde is the gentle GIANT type: something on the order of 6'6", ~300 lbs and an avid/expert hunter with a freezer full of game. Good thing you're riding a Yamaha. :)

Exactly what we have plotted in MapSource for the ride home. I've never seen Crater Lake before, so that's gettin' done this trip.

See you all at WFO. :yahoo:

Now, I best git to considering mountin' up some new rubber.

Us Gen 1 boys will take any advantage we can get, and Mike you know 89 is much more fun than 5.

LDRydr Thanks for the heads up on the Rally. Wish I could meet Kneebone but I'd just start to hassle those Beemer boys and end up getting tared and feathered with final drive oil.

Love McKenzie pass but may not have the time with a late leave from GP and need top push past Bend to LaPine or Klamath if I have enough daylight.

I checked in with GP and stayed at a motel they recommended, that was just up the road by the Harley dealership! Nice and clean (comes with a breakfast that I could have done without).

Got up early and rode to the shop. Watched the work and would not have missed learning more about suspension! The guys were totally cool about explaining the process!

I showed up at around 9:00AM when they opened, and was out around 1:00PM.

+1 on trying to hit Crater Lake. My nephew was kicking and screaming about going the extra miles to see some dumb lake! To say he was blown away by this place is an understatement! It's one of those places you have to see to believe! Been there many times as a lad, and was still awestruck!

I was there back in December for my rebuild. I'd suggest putting the address in Google maps and selecting satelite view. If you zoom in you can see all local businesses listed on the picture. There's a McDonalds across the street.

Funny you should mention concern about excess heat. The day I chose to ride down it was a balmy 25 degrees for my 3 hour ride down. While they got started on my bike, I went to the previously mentioned McDonalds for HOT coffee and HOT breakfast to thaw out. Then I spent the rest of the time watching the process and asking questions. I normally wouldn't ask to watch, but they offered and I'm glad I was there because I learned a lot.

Oh yea, I didn't get to test the new forks and Ohlins shock until later because it didn't get much above freezing on the ride home and there were still a lot of icy areas on my favorite twisty roads. And then to add insult to injury, I got snowed on (changing to rain) as I neared home. I suspect you'll get to really test your install on the way home and I'm sure you'll be as impressed as I have been with their work!
