Awesome report. I still haven't see the mythical OM, but none of the other clowns around here quite have his style so he must be real. Real what? Dunno.
Here he is, OM basking in the NW sun.

I fully agree with The Kreston Kowboy Kid dcarver, this photo is incredibly beautiful. Almost makes you forget you are looking at a raggedy ass dogs butt slow spider challenged Gen II!

I especially like this pix..

Yet again, OM delivers a great RR :thumbsupsmileyanim:

I have to go and re-read it now...

Bejaysus, Don. You've the poet's gift.
You already know our secret, Old Michael; Irish can talk the ears off of an entire herd of Basset Hound's. All Fenians are blessed with gift of gab and never ending stream of Blarney!!!

Enjoyed a very restful night at the Doc's B & B.

Got up early and did some yard work, fed the animals, and washed the bikes before waking up Rich and Susan.

Okay.

That's a lie.

I friggin' slept till way past sunrise, which -honestly- is very unusual for me.

Stumbled up the the "main house", and was treated to a good hot breakfast. Thank you, Susan.

Rich and I saddled up, and headed to our rendezvous with a few of the local bastards.

We met at the parking lot on the south end of the Deception Pass Bridge.

DeceptionPassTWOcopy.jpg

Waiting for us, with broad smiles on their handsome mugs -

George (escapefjrtist) & Dave (Niehart)

IMG_9545XXXXX.jpg

Kevin (Panman) - who'd end up being our very capable ride leader for the most of the day...

IMG_9549XXXXX.jpg

...and Brad (TravelinFJR?)

IMG_9543XXXXX.jpg

Mt. Baker would be our destination.

That's a big-assed (10,780 ft.) mountain about 30 miles

east of Bellingham. It's a relatively young, active(!) volcano, and is part of the Cascade Range.

Niehart - who'd explained to me that he was a volcanologist (and a gynecologist)- told me

that there was little chance it would blow this day.

"More likely later in the week."

Okay.

Off we go.

IMG_9854XXXXX.jpg

Some of these shots might be out of order.

We all have our struggles. :D

IMG_9868XXXXX.jpg

We passed through the little town of Edison, and there we met Tom (Tom Edison), who'd join us for the run up the

mountain.

IMG_9904XXXX.jpg

IMG_9870XXXXX.jpg

IMG_9877XXXXX.jpg

Niehart.

Gesturing?

IMG_9911XXXXX.jpg

Well, it'd been almost an hour since our "first" breakfast, so we stopped in Acme for breakfast-breakfast.

(Yes, this is the same Acme where Wile E. Coyote buys his rockets and skates and stuff.)

Panman loves to stop.

"Any opportunity to take off my pants, Michael. Know what I mean?"

(No jammies this time.)

IMG_9559.jpg

Just toast and coffee?

(Tom Edison and Dr. Rich on the right. Not visible - Curly, Moe, and Larry.)

IMG_9556XXXXX.jpg

Kevin!

(To be fair, the ice cream was mine.)

IMG_9552XXXXX.jpg

Niehart, the gregarious bastard that he is, approached a local in the banquet room.

IMG_9558XXXXX-2.jpg

Fat 'n' happy, we carried on.

IMG_9923XXXXX.jpg

IMG_9907XXXXX.jpg

DAMNIT!

Gotta run to work.

I'll wrap it up shortly.

I love the way your mind works. You have an eight year old stand-up comic trapped inside your body.

Thanks?

So, we're heading out and up Mt. Baker.

Panman leading the charge.

We stop for gas, and run into Stephen.

WAStitchFive.jpg

And I finally get to see that beautiful Kawasaki of his - in person.

IMG_9561XXXXX.jpg

(I figger I could outrun it if I took off my topbox. :D I've got a Gen 2, after all!)

Now our happy group is 7 old men bikes strong!

IMG_9565XXXXX.jpg

A good bit of traffic and a little construction, but mostly just a fun road as we started up the mountain proper.

It was nice to get up into cooler air.

IMG_9567XXXXX.jpg

Stopped near the top, and took pictures of each other, impeded passing traffic, and watered the bushes, trees, and rocks.

IMG_9936XXXXX.jpg

Hydration break. (My god, Niehart. No, I don't wanna hear "7 Ways to Please Your Lover".)

IMG_9597XXXXXcopy.jpg

We stopped here and there, and it was a leisurely ride back to Whidbey Island.

IMG_9599XXXXX.jpg

Tom and Stephen dropped off on the way back, and the rest of us headed to Rich's place, where Susan

and Rich fed us barbeque (with grilled onions-mmmm) and other goodies.

A fine day, and I'd ride with these guys any time. Really good seeing you fellows, and thanks

for taking the time to welcome me to Washington.

I'll cram the rest of my trip into just one more post. Sorry for draggin' this out.

Thursday morning, Susan fed me again AND had made and packed me a loaf of zucchini/walnut bread

and a big bag of peanut butter cookies. What a gal!

Oh! Almost forgot to mention their other muttley, Spitz.

(Here he is outside my door the night before, waiting for me to throw his frisbee.)

IMG_9604.jpg

A more appropriate name woulda been Cupcake.

IMG_9951XXXXX.jpg

We're now buddies for life.

And Rich was kind enough to drag his ancient ass outta bed ....

IMG_9949XXXXX.jpg

...and accompany me down to the ferry terminal to see me off.

(It was a bit foggy.)

IMG_9952XXXXX.jpg

Thanks for everything, my friend.

IMG_9616XXXXX.jpg

The marine layer makes it look a bit gloomy, but it was a beautiful morning.

Some images from this trip will stick with me.

IMG_9617XXXXX.jpg

IMG_9620.jpg

Back to Fort Townsend and the Olympic Peninsula.

IMG_9636.jpg

The fellow parked next to me was hauling some construction materials (flashing) back to the mainland - on his KLR.

Great bikes.

IMG_9653XXXXX.jpg

I'd decided that on this return leg, I'd ride south along the eastern edge of the peninsula.

IMG_9664XXXXX.jpg

The fog had cleared.

Pulled off and went up a few miles of gravel road to check this out.

IMG_9673XXXXX.jpg

IMG_9664XXXXX-1.jpg

IMG_9663XXXXX.jpg

And on down, with the road bumping along the edge of the Puget Sound.

IMG_9687XXXXX-1.jpg

IMG_9692XXXXX.jpg

Had to put up with miles and miles of this...

IMG_9698XXXXX.jpg

...and this...

IMG_9699XXXXX-1.jpg

Down near Shelton, I turned west again, put away my camera, picked up the pace and started taking secondary roads.

Worked on all that Total Control cornering stuff, and pretended I actually knew what I was doing.

Who am I kidding? I'm just an old dude on a bagger.

Fun though.

Eventually, as the day was drawing down, I made my way back to Astoria, and decided to again get a Kabin for the night.

(That red Ortlieb bag, on my back seat, contained my tent. Never opened it the whole trip. )

Ran into town, enjoyed a snapper dinner, grabbed a couple of beers, and returned to my Kabin just as darkness fell.

Noticed a nearby hut was occupied by troublemakers. I could tell by their wheels.

IMG_9731XXXXX.jpg

Still life.

IMG_9976XXXXX.jpg

Tomorrow - Down the Oregon coast and back to California!

Quickly.

Great photos and report -- as always OM! Next time keep coming north. I am only another 2300 miles north of the Canadian border. Piece of cake. I miss your smiling face dude! Karen sends her hugs.

Headin' home.

From Astoria, I just stayed on 101 all the way down into California, where I spent the next night

in Crescent City.

The last morning of my trip, I continued down to and through Eureka, and

took Highway 36 back into the valley, and then home.

Here are the last few images of the whole mess.

Cannon Beach area.

Thanks for reading my ride report.

Spectacular pics and report OM!

Especially like the bobblehead touch...

Come back the great wet north and we'll show you some more scenery in these parts. Maybe even some of the *secret* roads. :D
